๐Ÿš›๐ŸŒณ The countdown is on... Autumn despatches begin next week!
While many gardens are still enjoying the height of summer, we're already looking ahead to one of our busiest seasons.
Next week marks the start of our first wholesale despatches, with container-grown trees leaving the nursery to help garden centres restock ready for the autumn planting season.
Our team has spent months growing, potting and caring for thousands of trees, and it's always exciting to see the first deliveries heading out across the country.
Autumn is one of the very best times to plant trees, with warm soils encouraging strong root establishment before winter. That's why we're busy preparing orders now, ensuring our customers are fully stocked and ready for the season ahead.
If you're a wholesale customer and are planning your autumn orders, now's the perfect time to get in touch.
Here's to another successful planting season! ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ‚

๐ŸŒณ Plant a tree for shade, create your own natural air conditioning. ๐ŸŒฟโ˜€๏ธ
As summers become hotter, planting trees is one of the simplest and most effective ways to make our gardens more comfortable.
Notice how the grass under the tree is greener? Did you know that the temperature beneath a mature tree can be around 10ยฐC cooler than areas in full sun? The combination of cooling shade and the natural process of transpiration, where trees release water vapour through their leaves, helps to lower the surrounding air temperature and create a more pleasant environment for people, plants and wildlife.
Whether you're looking to shade a patio, cool your home, or simply create a more enjoyable outdoor space, planting the right tree today is an investment for the future.
Some of our favourite shade trees include:
๐ŸŒณ Catalpa โ€“ large tropical-style leaves and beautiful summer flowers.
๐Ÿ Acer โ€“ elegant canopies with stunning autumn colour.
๐ŸŒฟ Cercis โ€“ perfect for smaller gardens and thrives in warmer conditions.
๐ŸŒณ Plane Trees โ€“ ideal for larger spaces with broad, cooling canopies.
๐ŸŒณ Lime and Oak โ€“ timeless choices that provide magnificent shade for generations.
The best time to plant a shade tree was years ago. The second-best time is today.

The pruning rule every fruit grower should know. ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿ’โœ‚๏ธ ONLY prune stone fruit (cherries, plums, apricots, gages, damsons and the like) during the Summer Months, ideally June/July.
Stone fruit trees should only be pruned while they are actively growing unlike apples and pears, which can be pruned in winter and summer.
Why? Summer pruning helps reduce the risk of diseases such as silver leaf and bacterial canker, which are much more likely to infect trees through pruning wounds during the colder, wetter months.
If you have cherries, plums, gages, damsons, peaches, nectarines or apricots, now is the ideal time to:
๐ŸŒณ Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches.
โ˜€๏ธ Open up the canopy to improve light and airflow.
๐Ÿ‘ Maintain the shape and size of your tree.
๐ŸŒฟ Encourage healthy growth for years to come.
๐Ÿ Encourage the formation of fruit buds for next year's crop.
๐ŸŒณ Keep trained fruit trees, such as espaliers, cordons and fans, neat and manageable.
Make sure you keep standing back to look at your progress.
Pick a dry couple of days to do this in and make sure you use clean, sharp secateurs.
A little summer pruning now can help keep your stone fruit trees healthy, productive and looking their very best.
Save the winter pruning for apples and pears โ€“ stone fruits are strictly a summer job! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’

โค๏ธ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’› Cercis โ€“ a tree for the future ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’œ
As our climate continues to change, Cercis (Redbud) is proving itself to be one of the standout trees for modern gardens.
Not only does it thrive in warm, dry conditions once established, but it also offers one of the most spectacular foliage displays of any small tree. From rich burgundy and deep purple to vibrant gold, apricot and fiery orange, there's a Cercis to suit every garden and every style.
Add to that its masses of spring flowers, which appear directly on the branches before the leaves emerge, and you've got a tree that delivers season after season.
The recent hot, dry weather has shown just how resilient these beautiful trees can be. If you're planting for the future, Cercis should be high on your list.
Which is your favourite? ๐ŸŒณ

๐ŸŒณ Summer is in full swing at the nursery! โ˜€๏ธ
Despite the recent hot weather, it's all go here at Frank P Matthews. Our field-grown and container-grown trees are looking fantastic, putting on plenty of healthy growth and thriving in the warm conditions thanks to the care and attention of our nursery team.
Another exciting milestone is just around the corner โ€“ budding season. ๐ŸŒฑ
Budding is a skilled propagation technique where a single bud from a chosen variety is carefully inserted onto a young rootstock. Over time, the bud grows to become the new tree, allowing us to produce true-to-type fruit and ornamental varieties with all the characteristics gardeners and growers love.
Our newly planted rootstocks are now ready for this next stage, and over the coming weeks our propagation team will be hard at work creating the next generation of quality trees that will eventually find their way into gardens, orchards and landscapes across the UK.
It's one of the busiest โ€“ and most rewarding โ€“ times of the year! ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒณ Catalpa โ€“ the tree that's thriving in the heat! โ˜€๏ธ
If you're looking for a tree that can cope with hotter, drier summers, Catalpa (Indian Bean Tree) is well worth considering. Once established, it's remarkably tolerant of dry conditions, making it an excellent choice as our climate continues to change.
With its huge heart-shaped leaves, beautiful orchid-like scented flowers and tropical appearance, Catalpa creates a real statement in any garden. Better still, if space is limited, it responds brilliantly to hard pruning, allowing you to keep it compact while still enjoying its spectacular foliage.
After the recent hot weather, our Catalpas are absolutely loving life and flowering their socks off โ€“ we genuinely don't think we've ever seen them looking better!
Would you find a place for one in your garden?

๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ It's plum season! ๐ŸŒณ
There's nothing quite like picking a perfectly ripe plum straight from your own tree. Sweet, juicy and bursting with flavour, they're one of the easiest and most rewarding fruits to grow.
Whether you love traditional English favourites with rich purple, red or golden-yellow fruit, or the deep blue German varieties renowned for their exceptional flavour, there's a plum for every taste and every garden.
Short on space? No problem! Plums can be fan trained against a sunny wall or fence, making them ideal for smaller gardens while creating a beautiful feature. We offer a fantastic range of expertly trained fan trees, ready to transform your growing space.
With stunning spring blossom, delicious summer fruit and beautiful autumn colour, plum trees really do offer something for every season.
Which variety is your favourite? ๐Ÿ‘ (Yes, we know they're plums! ๐Ÿ˜‰, there is no plum emoji!)
