Nick Lowe borrowed this line for his song, giving a classic literary twist to his catchy pop hit in 1979.

In millennial speak ‘I’m not gonna lie’
but I got da blues.
‘How dare you’ I hear y’all shriek,
‘Isn’t six weeks away enough for anyone’
The thing is you CAN get too used to a good thing
and I was working while away. I promise!
So to ease myself back in I’m trying to recreate golden fields of sunshine & the bray of the villiage donkey back here in Tetbury.
This little Steiffy chappie on wheels is mercifully mute & available now to move on to pastures new.

Some days are better than others. With my back to the East, the sun rose slowly in my rear view mirror turning from star-pocked black to burnt orange and as it changed the mercury slowly rose from 14 to 35 degrees celsius.

Arriving with the best antique dealers across Europe, sellers and buyers, to the beginning of the September déballage, the atmosphere dense with anticipation of the great find. When the klaxon rings out & the gates open the most eager break into a run.
The first hour or so is a frenzy, though on the whole no one else makes a claim once a hand is on a desired object, but hasty decisions have to be made & cash passed over once the deal is done.
Sometimes I have a shopping list but rarely is that fulfilled, though today I wanted to find a ‘good’ painting and that I did. First thing.
When the stampede has calmed down & collections are made by sweaty porters with huge trolleys, it’s always good to hear that everyone wanted what you have bought. Then, as only in France, it’s red wine & cheese for breakfast, catching up with old friends, commiserating over those who have gone, not believing we’ve been at this game for thirty years and more.
It’s all over in a few hours & then lunch at a beach side restaurant gloating & boasting over the haul washed down with rosé.

It’s been my intention to visit for the a while & really is not far from us so finally we went this week to , The house of Wicker, to see with my own eyes what it’s all about.
Photographed & seen frequently throughout the interiors press, and on this platform with their own publication Éditions Flammarion I was overjoyed to find it even more beautiful than I imagined.
The most genial owners, showed us around but equally we were free to wander & snap with abandon, though Alma, an Andalusian Podenco kept a close eye.
We left feeling inspired & creatively nourished.

Abrivados and bandidos 🐎 🐂

Traditional bull-running events in the Provence and Camargue regions of southern France.
An abrivado is the morning run where bulls are guided from pasture to the village arena by horsemen, while a bandido is the evening return trip back to the fields.
•
Here are my amateur photos from last weeks bull run in Uzes.
Part of the annual Fete Votive which was established 52 years ago. Always a highlight of the first week in August.
•
The spectacle is just that, the white horses, the small black bulls, the rugged cowboys in their Camarguais shirts & the woman with tightly drawn back hair in their traditional attire. The atmosphere, the local young lads chasing the calvacade trying to grab the bulls tail, the heat & chilled wine in the morning.
What’s not to love!
