What is Silk / Viscose Velvet?
Silk velvet, a luxurious fabric characterized by a short, dense, and soft pile, has roots dating back to roughly 2000 BCE in Egypt and later China.
Historically, it was a rare, expensive fabric reserved for royalty and clergy due to its complex hand-weaving process. It gained popularity in Europe during the Renaissance.
The Weave Process is often produced as "double cloth" on special looms, the two layers are joined by extra warp threads.
These threads are woven over wires or rods, and then cut using a small blade to create the pile.
The pile, which determines the luster, is often made from silk or viscose for maximum softness and brightness, offering a fluid drape unlike stiffer cotton velvets.
Silk velvet is a luxurious, soft, and lustrous fabric created by a specialized, complex weaving process where two layers are woven simultaneously, connected by an extra pile warp, and then cut apart to create a short, dense, and upright pile. Typically composed of viscose pile on a silk base, it is renowned for its high sheen, excellent drapability.
