Red Hot Chili Peppers released their self titled debut album on this day in 1984, introducing the Los Angeles band's unconventional collision of funk, punk, and rock to the world. The record arrived more than seven years before Blood Sugar S*x Magik would turn them into international stars.

Produced by Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill, The Red Hot Chili Peppers featured Anthony Kiedis and Flea alongside guitarist Jack Sherman and drummer Cliff Martinez. Founding guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons did not perform on the album, though Slovak later returned to the band and appeared on its next two records.

More than four decades later, the debut offers a raw look at the beginnings of a band that would eventually sell tens of millions of albums, enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and become one of the most successful alternative rock acts in history.

I was fortunate enough to see the almighty SUNN O))) at The Prospect Building in Bristol last night. If you’ve ever wondered what the inside of an erupting volcano or an earthquake sounds like, it’s Sunn O))). Truly the loudest, heaviest duo on the planet! I’ve even included a 3 minute video from my pocket (accidental but epic) so you can hear what it’s like after your retinas have been dislodged by the force of the sound waves and you’re rendered blind! My nose vibrated and my clothes moved under the sheer power!

The band is known for its distinctive visual style and slow, heavy sound, which blends diverse genres including doom metal, drone, black metal, and dark ambient, as well as for their extremely loud live performances. The band’s core members are Stephen O’Malley (also of Khanate and Burning Witch) and Greg Anderson (of Goatsnake and Engine Kid).
