❓ TOO SOFT AROUND THE EDGES?
The shoulders and sidewalls of a silage clamp are some of the hardest areas to protect properly.
One of the main reasons is compaction.
Along the walls and shoulders, it can be harder to achieve the same density as in the main body of the clamp. That can leave air pockets and channels within the silage.
If oxygen is able to move into these areas, it creates the conditions for yeasts, moulds and heating, increasing the risk of spoilage.
The result can be:
📉 Higher dry matter losses at the edges
🦠 More yeast and mould activity
⚡ Reduced energy and feed value
🔥 Faster heating at feed-out
And because losses along the walls and shoulders are less visible than spoilage across the top surface, they can easily go unnoticed until the clamp is opened.
That’s why the edges deserve just as much attention as the top:

🌽 MAIZE HARVEST: COMPACTION AND SEALING MATTER

Good compaction and sealing are important for every silage crop — but maize deserves particular attention.

Compared with grass silage, maize silage is often more vulnerable to aerobic spoilage once exposed to air. One reason is its higher starch and sugar content, which can encourage the activity of yeasts. If oxygen is allowed in through poor compaction, delayed sealing or damage to the cover, those yeasts can begin using valuable nutrients, leading to heating, dry matter loss and reduced feed value.

That makes two things especially important at maize harvest: removing as much air as possible during filling, and keeping oxygen out during storage.

A few reminders when filling the clamp:

🚜 Compact continuously as the crop is being filled, working in thin, even layers.

📐 Pay particular attention to the sides and shoulders, where achieving consistent density can be more difficult.

⏱️ Seal without unnecessary delay once filling is complete.

🛡️ Create a continuous airtight barrier across the top, shoulders and walls of the clamp.

⚫ Protect and secure the film properly so wind, movement, birds or machinery cannot compromise the seal.

The principle is simple: remove the air during filling, then prevent oxygen getting back in.

With hot, dry conditions putting pressure on forage production across parts of the UK and Europe, protecting every tonne harvested matters.
Good silage preservation starts before the first trailer arrives. Taking time now to prepare your clamp can help minimise avoidable losses and protect the dry matter and nutrients you put into store.
Before harvest, check:
🔍 Clamp condition – inspect floors and walls and repair any damage.
🧹 Cleanliness – clear out old silage, debris and anything that could damage the film or contaminate the fresh forage..
⬜ Wall film – have it ready to line the clamp and help create an effective seal around the edges/silage shoulders..
📏 Film requirements – calculate what you'll need before harvest starts, including oxygen barrier film and protective covers.
⚫ Weights & sealing materials – make sure gravel bags, tyres (tires) or other weighting systems are ready and in good condition.
🚜 Your filling plan – plan for effective consolidation and rapid sealing once filling is complete. Well planned logistics will help save diesel and idling time too.

Still using conventional PE film?
See what happens when oxygen gets through.
Oxygen is one of the biggest causes of deterioration in stored forage. That's why keeping it out is so important.
In this simple demonstration, banana slices were sealed beneath a standard PE film and Passion Yellow Oxygen Barrier Film.
The result is easy to see.
The banana beneath the standard PE film browned much more quickly, while the banana beneath Passion Yellow remained noticeably fresher.
While bananas clearly aren't silage, they provide a simple visual demonstration of what happens when more oxygen reaches what's being protected.
The same principle applies to silage. The more oxygen that enters the clamp, the greater the opportunity for deterioration and dry matter loss.

How T H I C K should a silage film be?
Thickness is easy to see and feel, but the most important measure of performance is its Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR).
OTR measures how much oxygen passes through a silage film over a 24-hour period.
The lower the OTR, the better the oxygen barrier.
OTR values are usually reported using one of two recognised test methods:
• ASTM D3985 – measures oxygen transmission using 100% oxygen.
• DIN 53380-3 (or the equivalent ISO method) – measures transmission using air (21% oxygen).
The numbers are different because the test conditions are different, but the principle is always the same:
Lower OTR = Better oxygen protection.
For example, a thick black polyethylene sheet may feel stronger, but it can still allow significant amounts of oxygen to pass through. By comparison, a true oxygen barrier film such as Passion Yellow has an OTR around 1,000 times lower than conventional polyethylene films, helping to dramatically reduce oxygen ingress into the clamp.
So next time you're comparing silage films, don't just compare the thickness.
Compare the OTR—and make sure it's a high performance oxygen barrier film.
