🌱 Hosepipe ban – a quick note for gardeners

With the current South West Water hosepipe restrictions, we’ve had a few customers wondering whether it’s still OK to buy and plant during the warm weather.

The good news is that the rules include a number of exemptions to help protect plants and crops where necessary:

🌿 Newly purchased plants can be watered by hosepipe for the first 14 days after purchase – including plants bought after the hosepipe ban began.

🥕 Food crops grown at home or at a private allotment, where using a watering can is not feasible.

🌳 Trees, hedges and saplings planted within the last planting season may also be watered where using a watering can isn’t reasonably practical.

💧 Certain drip or trickle irrigation systems can still be used, provided they meet South West Water’s water-efficient requirements.

♿ Customers on South West Water’s Priority Services Register who are unable to make reasonable adjustments because of a health condition or disability may also be exempt.

🪣 Watering cans and buckets can still be used as normal.

🌧️ Stored rainwater and other non-mains water can continue to be used, including with a hosepipe.

For newly planted shrubs, trees and perennials, a good thorough watering less frequently is usually better than a little water every day. Adding a layer of mulch will also help keep precious moisture in the soil and watering in the morning or evening is always best.

So there’s no need to put the garden on hold 🌱 — just water thoughtfully and make every drop count.

Full details and eligibility for exemptions can be found on the South West Water website.

☀️ Looking for a plant that thrives in hot, dry summers?

Leucophyllum frutescens, commonly known as Texas Sage or Texas Ranger, is the perfect choice. Native to the arid regions of Texas, New Mexico and northern Mexico, it’s naturally adapted to heat, drought and full sun.

Its beautiful silvery-grey foliage is complemented by striking purple flowers, which often appear after periods of humidity or rain – giving it the nickname “Barometer Bush.”

This stunning shrub brings a touch of the American Southwest to any garden while coping brilliantly with the increasingly hot, dry summers we’re seeing here in the UK. 💜🌿
