Christmas party by the Thames!

The oldest river side tavern in London, The Prospect of Whitby dates back to about 1520. Situated in Wapping with a smattering of other historic pubs nearby, full of colourful tales of pirates, hangings and other grizzly things. It's fascinating!
The room we had our party in was also said to be the site of some of the earliest boxing matches to ever be held.
Thoroughly recommend a visit here - lovely Thames side walk from Tower Hill tube station.

A charming naive painting on board of Polperro Harbour, Cornwall. The view is still visible today, looking south across the harbour from The Warren, next to what is now Polperro Museum of Smuggling and Fishing. Signed by the artist, S. Kitley. In simple painted timber frame. The artist has obviously reused the board at some point as there is another painting on the reverse. Early to mid 20th Century.

You may have noticed that we've been rather quiet of late.

Sam is now working in global disaster management for a well known international charity - something he finds hugely rewarding and worthwhile, if not a little stressful at times! Good to 'give something back' though.

We will still strive to have some beautiful West Country chairs, but probably not to the same volume as before.

Sam has also been asked to do some consultancy work on Windsor chairs for a growing auction network, which is exciting.

We'd still love to see what you've got, if you have something you think you might like to sell. Country chairs and folk art in particular. And of course, nice old painted signs!

Several of our chairs are going into auction in October - details to follow.

A delightful stick back Windsor armchair in sycamore and ash. The solid slab seat with subtle saddle shaping supported by egg and reel turned front legs and plain slightly tapered rear legs. Two turned arm supports with a single arm bow and simple stick and hoop back. The whole piece is a lovely pale colour with small traces of original paint here and there. Solid, stable and ready for everyday use. Attributed to West Cornwall, c.1810.

SALE. A ‘continuous-arm’ Windsor chair. Made exclusively in the South Devon village of Yealmpton, there is no comparable design throughout the rest of the British chair-making tradition. There are similarities to chairs made on the East Coast of the USA and some have suggested that West Country chairmakers emigrated to America and took their traditional methods with them. Whether this is true or not is unclear but it seems plausible. This particular example has faux bamboo turned legs with ‘box’ stretcher, elm seat with a distinctive ‘waist’, faux bamboo spindles and a steam-bent continuous arm. All in fetching worn and patinated blue-grey paint. Suitable for everyday use. Characterful old blacksmith repair to the underside of one arm. These incredibly pretty chairs rarely come up for sale. Attributed to Yealmpton, South Devon. c.1820.

SALE. A very rare, perhaps completely unique, ‘continuous arm’ Windsor chair. Made exclusively in the South Devon village of Yealmpton, there is no comparable design throughout the rest of the British chair-making tradition. There are similarities to chairs made on the East Coast of the USA and some have suggested that West Country chairmakers emigrated to America and took their traditional methods with them. Whether this is true or not is unclear but it seems plausible.
This particular example is unlike any I’ve seen before, owing to the three central ‘flattened’ spindles or splats. Two have been replaced at some point but one is most certainly original. Perhaps made as a prototype by a chairmaker or to the specification of a client, it has its own unique quirk and charm.
Faux bamboo turned legs with ‘box’ stretcher, rounded elm seat, faux bamboo spindles and three ‘flattened’ splats with a steam-bent continuous arm. All in 19th century black paint with plenty of characterful wear and in places revealing the original cream paint underneath which gives it a most wonderful patina.
Suitable for everyday use.
These chairs rarely come up for sale, let alone such a unique example.
Attributed to Yealmpton, South Devon. c.1820.

SALE. A scarce highly original example of an early 19th century West Country Windsor armchair. Plain tapered legs untied by an H-form stretcher. The solid elm seat with subtle saddle shaping. Two tapered arm supports and two plain stick supports with seven long sticks, morticed through the single arm bow and up into the tall back hoop - this having the flattened profile, typical of chairs of this type. The whole piece in utterly untouched condition and with a fetching patina from 200 years of daily use.
West Country, attributed to Cornwall, c.1820.
