The second of these really incredible Louis XVI painted panels dating from c. 1780.
This one, a cartouche design, was possibly made as a master plan for a ceiling medallion. In Neo Classical style with ribbon swags, scrolling acanthus and honeysuckle sprigs. It has a beautiful soft palette of pinks, blues, olives and yellows.
The best bit about this panel is the creasing and the pin holes and wear and tear. You can really imagine the artist rolling it up to take to and from the studio to the palace and the pin holes from tacking it up on the wall to map out the master panel.
Bearing in mind its original use and that it is almost 250 years old, it’s rather remarkable to have such a piece of interior design history on your wall.
