Truro BID Information on Truro BID's activities & businesses matters for those working in Truro City Centre. We first became operational in October 2007.

Truro Business Improvement District (BID) is a business led initiative which gives businesses the power to raise funds locally to be spent locally on improving a defined commercial area. Truro BID represents circa 380 Truro businesses and from 2007 to 2017 invested £3.4million into the City centre. We’re now in our fourth 5 year term, which runs until October 2027. We are independent from local au

thorities and other statutory agencies and deliver projects over and above the baseline service provided by them. Some of our work includes:

∙ Delivering and funding Truro’s annual City Centre Christmas Lights scheme (along with past donations from Lionel and Carol Knight).

∙ Enhancing the festive offer with street entertainment, large scale projections on buildings, traffic-free main shopping streets, markets, and supporting Coppice Theatre shows and Father Christmas grottos.

∙ Delivering the Truro Trend high-profile Catwalk at the Cathedral.

∙ Initiating and supporting one day markets; e.g. the Duchy Fair’s Cornwall Shop Small Markets and Truro Antiques and Collectables Markets.

∙ Joint-funding with Truro City Council the annual floral hanging baskets each spring.

∙ Working with Visit Truro to promote the city, including contributing financially to printed marketing activity (Truro Guides) and Visit Truro’s website.

∙ Representing the interests of businesses on plans for the Pydar Regeneration and Truro Town Fund investment plan.

Proposed changes to on-street parking in Truro city centre are being considered by Cornwall Council to help increase the turnover of spaces and improve access to parking for residents and visitors.

Cornwall Council are consulting on proposals to introduce a new system of on-street parking management at a number of locations in Truro: Castle Street, Little Castle Street, River Street, Kenwyn Street, Lemon Street, Tabernacle Street, Chapel Hill, Hendra Road, St George's Road, Stations Road.

All the locations are currently subject to free, limited-waiting parking restrictions ranging from 30 mins to 4 hours depending on the street. Under the proposals, the existing free parking periods would be retained, but drivers would be required to obtain a parking session when they park.

Drivers would then have the option to extend their stay by paying for additional parking time, up to the maximum stay permitted at that location.

There would be no charge for the initial free parking period. Parking sessions could be obtained using: a parking app, telephone; or a payment parking machine.
The proposed parking machines would accept card payments only and not cash.

The People Hub offers free advice and support to residents in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who are looking for help getting into employment, training or fully funded qualifications.

Connect to Work supports people with health-related or complex challenges to find work and succeed in it.

Delivered through the People Hub, and funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Connect to Work can help residents find meaningful, long-term employment and provide personalised, one-to-one support.

Connect to Work also supports people who are already in work but may be at risk of losing their job, helping them to stay in employment.

The Youth Jobs Grant provides businesses across Great Britain with a £3,000 payment per hire when they recruit a young person aged 18-24 who has been unemployed and on Universal Credit for at least six months.

In return, employees would need to:
- Offer a genuine paid job of at least 25 hours per week, that you would otherwise recruit for
- Complete a straightforward application
- Confirm your organisation meets requirements to ensure roles are safe, fair and good quality
- Provide a named point of contact and keep DWP information of anything affecting the role of grant application.

Truro Cathedral will light up green on Saturday 19 September, from 7pm to 9pm as part of World Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week.

The event aims to help to raise awareness of mitochondrial disease and show support for the children and families living with these rare and life-limiting conditions.

The illumination is being organised by The Noah Jordan Foundation (TNJF), a Cornish based charity supporting children and families affected by paediatric mitochondrial disease.

Green is recognised as the colour of mitochondrial disease awareness and represents hope, support and solidarity for the mitochondrial disease community.

Mitochondrial diseases are a group of rare genetic disorders that affect the mitochondria – the parts of our cells responsible for producing energy. They can affect children in many different ways and, for some, can be life-limiting.

By lighting Truro Cathedral green, both the event organisers and Truro Cathedral hope to help bring mitochondrial disease into the public eye and stand in solidarity with the children, families and communities affected by it.

The TNJF team will be on site at the cathedral and would welcome people to come along to learn more about the disease and the work the Foundation is doing to support those affected by it. A reminder that the annual Truro Half Marathon returns this Sunday 13 September and starts at 9.30am from Lemon Quay (registration opens at 8am and the race HQ is at Hall for Cornwall).

The BIG Truro Market returns this Saturday 12 September, with local crafts, lifestyle products and produce.

Held on Lemon Quay from 9am to 4pm, it will feature around 60 Cornwall Shop Small and Truro Farmers Market stalls.

Visitors can also enjoy live music, creative workshops and street food.
We are continuing to support Cornwall Shop Small with a small contribution towards operating costs, as the markets boost city footfall and can benefit local businesses, including hospitality.

The BIG Truro Market is also supported by Truro City Council and Visit Truro.

Cormac started the traffic management associated with works in Boscawen St on Monday 7 September, which will be taking place until Friday 6 November. Please see below information given to us by Cormac and Cornwall Council.

Cormac are carrying out further repairs to sections of granite setts (cobbles) on Boscawen St and granite paving on Lower Lemon St, which focus on areas that have not previously been repaired.

On Boscawen St, Cormac will be lifting, cleaning and relaying sections of granite setts in six locations where repairs are needed.

On Lower Lemon St, Cormac will be repairing areas of granite paving outside Mannings Hotel, Michael Spiers and on the opposite side of the road. The paving will be removed, the underlying foundation rebuilt where needed, and the granites reset to create a safer and more durable surface.

Work will be completed before the Remembrance Sunday parade and events leading up to Christmas.

For safety reasons and to allow materials to cure effectively, the road closures and 24/7 traffic management will need to remain in place until the work is completed.

Cormac will signpost an alternative route, maintain pedestrian access to all properties and can be contacted on 0300 1234 222.

Huge congratulations to Oli and the team at Enigma Escape Cornwall who have been awarded number one for their ‘Fear of the Unknown’ Escape Room by UK Escape Room Awards.

Fear was the first room designed and built by Enigma Escape, which was a 13 month labour of love and passion.
