On this day in 1942, 'the Heydrich job', Prague

OPERATION ANTHROPOID

SOE operators Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík, Czech nationals exiled to the UK by war, returned to Czechoslovakia with the mission to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, the German 'Protector' of occupied Czechoslovakia.

Architect of the Final Solution, and favoured by Hi**er, Heydrich is said to have been chosen as a target to demonstrate to senior N***s that they were not beyond the reach of Allied forces and resistance groups

Ambushed on the road, Heydrich survived the initial attack when a Sten gun jammed and a gr***de fell short, he later died from an infection caused by shrapnel wounds

N**i reprisals were severe, villages were burnt to the ground and the inhabitants executed or deported to concentration camps

In June that year, Kubiš and Gabčík and others, were cornered in a church, where they fought for over two hours before their deaths

OP ANTHROPOID was the only successful government sponsored assassination of a high ranking N**i official
