Ulverston Markets

Ulverston Markets This is the OFFICIAL page for the Ulverston Markets, incorporating the Market Hall and the Street Market. A great town, historic market, superb shopping.

A great town for visitors, historic market, festivals, superb shopping. Originally granted its market charter in 1280, Ulverston was a quiet market town until its expansion following the construction of the canal to the sea, which opened in 1796. Ulverston Market Charter was granted by King Edward 1 at Carlisle in 1280. It gave Roger of Lancaster the power to raise additional revenues from a Thursday Market and a Fair.

Today (Friday 31st March) is the final day that Ulverston Community Enterprises will be managing Ulverston’s markets on behalf of South Lakeland District Council.

We took on day-to-day management of Ulverston’s markets operations (market hall and street market) in 2016 for a trial period in order to establish if a social enterprise could operate the markets in a way that helped them to flourish at a time when there was a national trend toward decline.

During that five-year trial period and a one-year extension, UCE guided the markets through immense challenges such as changing shopping habits, pressures on traditional high street shopping and the coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath, but has concluded that long-term sustainability requires broader, strategic influence and an economic strategy beyond the means of a small social enterprise.

Ulverston’s markets need to be considered not in isolation from the local authority’s portfolio of markets across the region but as a constituent part of that portfolio. With government agendas focused on high streets, levelling up and shared prosperity and even a specific focus on the role of markets in those plans, Ulverston’s markets under the current management agreement would risk being left out of the bigger picture, the strategic plans for growth in the region and associated funding streams.

As such, Ulverston’s markets will be placed back in the hands of the local authority where they will join Kendal, Barrow and other markets as part of the new Westmorland and Furness’s portfolio and can be considered as one part of a greater whole and stand the best chance of being reinvigorated and able to play such a vital role in a thriving community.

The new Westmorland and Furness Council will assume responsibility for the markets, on 1 April 2023. All opening hours/days for both indoor and outdoor market will remain the same and we are confident of a smooth transition.

From then all enquiries regarding the markets should be directed to the new Markets Manager [email protected]

Finally we'd like to take the opportunity to express our enormous thanks to Steph Sexton, Markets Manager, who will be leaving the organisation a little later in April. Steph has done a fantastic job looking after the markets and in particular, the traders. We know she will be missed by so many but as a local resident, we hope you will continue to see Steph around and give her a wave when you do.

Everyone at Ulverston Community Enterprises, along with Ulverston Market stallholders, have been deeply saddened by the passing of Billy on Monday 19th December.

He brought much to the market, his customers colleagues and friends. He will be greatly missed.

All cards and messages left at the market have been (and will continue to be) passed to his family.

A big loss to all and we send our very best wishes to his family and friends at this time.

After a long three months we are delighted to be able to re-open the market hall in full, including the public toilets, on Monday 12th April, in line with STEP 2 of the government’s road map which allows for ‘all retail’ to open. All customers (unless exempt) must wear a face covering and maintain social distancing and sanitiser will be available for use on entering and exiting the hall.

Traders will be returning to the street market, on Thursdays and Saturdays, beginning Thursday 15th April. There will continue to be plenty of space around each stall to enable you to shop in a safe way.

It goes without saying that it’s been an incredibly tough time for everyone, and we’ve no doubt you’ll be looking forward to shopping locally and supporting the local traders and businesses that help make Ulverston the wonderful market town we know and love. We know we are!

Just remember; Hands, face, space; so we can all shop local and stay safe.

Opening hours:

Market Hall:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 9am-5pm

Street Market:
Thursday and Saturday 7am-3pm (approx)”

Due to the government’s recent announcement of a national lockdown to run from 5th November to 2nd December, the market hall is, unfortunately, required to close for this period. We are working with those traders who wish to operate a delivery service and will update this page along with other Ulverston focused groups with information about which traders will be offering a service and how to order from them.

The outdoor market will be open with essential retail only on Thursdays and Saturdays. We are still talking with traders to establish who would like to continue to trade and will update this page once this is agreed.

We’d like to thank our traders for staying strong and continuing to adapt through this ever changing world we find ourselves living in and we hope through the outdoor market and various local delivery services that you, our customers, will be able to access everything you need through this period.

Take care and continue to stay safe.

A reminder that the Market Hall is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday each week. We're currently operating a one-way system and ask everyone to respect social distancing at all times. All traders are operating a COVID secure stall in regards to queuing, taking payments and of course hygiene. They will happily explain anything specific to their stall.
