My children were born and raised in a multicultural city in the Middle East where we had a window into how different people celebrated their festivals.
Witnessing Diwali-the festival of lights, being celebrated by our neighbours, friends and colleagues was a delight to behold. The souks were full of colourful paint powders to make rangoli designs at home. We saw diya clay lanterns in different sizes and scented oils to burn in them. Our neighbours made sweets in different colours and sizes with gold leaf decoration which we enjoyed when they brought platefuls over to share.

It is with these memories that I have enjoyed putting together a collection of play things to enjoy learning about this colourful festival.
Festival of lights scarf can be hung on a wall or placed on the floor to explore with our 3D printed Rangoli tray and counters designed with . Add in some of our family pegs for some Diwali inspired small world play.
Shop now and celebrated at home or in your classroom next month.

A lovely customer recently shared how much joy this double stacker from Raduga Grëz has brought her little one.
Her little one loves it so much she has nicknamed in the Croissant, which seems quite appropriate in this first picture.
This is the beauty of open-ended play. Children see what they want to see and everyone sees something different.

Diwali, or the Festival of Lights as its known, falls on November 8th 2026 this year and is a beautiful celebration of the spiritual victory of light over darkness or good over evil.

Hindus commemorate the return of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and defeating the demon Ravana. It also honors Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
Sikhs celebrate the release of Guru Hargobind from imprisonment by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

You csn see people celebrating the 5 days of diwali by spring cleaning their homes, then decorating their home with clay lamps called diyas and colourful rangoli decorations.

I remember a neighbour of mine creating beautiful rangoli patterns on her front door step with colourful powdered paints and jewels, then surrounded by candles.

Bring Diwali into your home or classroom with this illustrated Festival of Lights scarf from Storytime™ scarves. Made from 100% cotton here in the UK with a colourful and vibrant design focusing on the decorative Lights of Diwali.
