Once the structure was complete, a roadworthy surface was necessary for drivers crossing the Tyne. 🚗

This was created using hand-laid mastic asphalt, which was four centimetres thick!

To be transported, the asphalt was heated outside the tunnel and later carted in using heated tankers. 👷

Keeping the Tyne Tunnels running safely and efficiently involves more than managing day-to-day traffic. 👷

Our operations team also manages abnormal load escorts through the Tyne Tunnels.

Through the Tyne Tunnels Community Fund, we are delighted to support Forest View Primary School with a donation of £10,000 to fund new playground equipment.

Further to this we have:

🚲 Donated 20 refurbished bikes to the school through our partnership with Recirculate

🥣 Fund the school's breakfast club through the Greggs Foundation

We are proud to support initiatives within our local community that help young people stay active, learn and thrive.
