This customer’s loudspeaker journey has passed through a remarkable succession of milestones, reading almost like an Avalon greatest hits. It’s a wonderful reminder of what makes this hobby so rewarding. Each new loudspeaker represented a genuine step forward, yet none of those that came before ever felt lacking. Every choice brought years of enjoyment and left with its reputation intact. By buying carefully from Lotus preloved, the customer also managed to experience this progression while losing remarkably little money along the way.

When we first met, the system was running Martin Logan Clarity. We had a bargain pair of Avalon Ascendant available and these were a good match with the Jeff Rowland amp. They weren't the most up-to-date speaker even all those years ago but the Ascendants always had fantastic harmonics, great imagery, soundstaging and exceptional refinement.

After several happy years, the natural progression was to the Avalon Idea which technically replaced the Ascendant. Although physically smaller, the Idea was a meaningful advance in virtually every respect. It offered greater transparency and linearity, improved dynamics and, perhaps most importantly, a much better ability to disappear from one's perception.

The Ideas gave sterling service for many years until a good deal on a set of Avalon Transcendent arose. A bigger Avalon with more weight, depth and resolution to boot.

The system though stands today with PM1, which are part of the modern day Avalon generation. As much as I loved the Transcendant's voluminous warmth and sense of humanism, the PM1 really is a better speaker again: faster, more precise, and with a greater dynamic range, better able to telegraph the exceptional fidelity from the Soulnote E2 / Thrax Ares combination.

Where will this system go next ? We actually already know the answer because the home demo has already taken place. Hemingway Z-Core cables all the way through to replace the highly competent although ageing HighFidelity Cables CT-1E.

Around seven years ago, we guided this customer through one of his earliest and most significant transitions in the evolution of his system, moving from a Linn Sondek with Naim Aro, Radikal and Keel to the direct drive Brinkmann Bardo.

The Bardo may be Brinkmann’s entry point, and the most accessible turntable in our own range, but it is a product that frequently remains at the heart of a system for many years, quietly witnessing the transformation of everything around it.

When the time eventually arrives, there are natural paths forward in the form of the more substantial Brinkmann Ta**us, or reference-level designs from Thrax and Primary Control but the Bardo is more than comfortable in a very high level system.

Equip it with an outstanding moving coil such as the Etna or MySonic Platinum and it rises to the occasion and responds in kind. Be sure also to lavish plenty of budget on the best phonostage possible to open everything up more and more; the little Bardo truly has so much to give.

Many or even most of our customers have been working with us for many years. This is the type of enriched helping relationship we try and foster with everyone who walks through our doors. Here in this post we showcase a typical long standing Lotus customer who has been dedicated to developing their system with us for more than a decade. Its been a fascinating and fun journey for both of us and at every juncture, the setup delivered a high level of engagement and satisfaction.

The system started life a long time ago with a Linn LP12 with Radikal and Aro, Jeff Rowland Continuum and Martin Logan clarity speakers. On the electronics side the Continuum became a Vitus SIA-025 and then a number of years on a Thrax Ares Integrated amplifier.

The Ares came with its inbuilt Dac and it was the first time the customer started enjoying digital. With a few choice network upgrades - including a Hemingway ethernet cable - he was so impressed with streaming that he recently added a Brinkmann Nyquist Dac.

As mainly a Vinyl lover though, the phono preamp in this setup has always been a critical component. After the phono board in the Jeff Rowland Integrated, we supplied the customer with an Allnic H3000 LCR preamp. This gave sterling service over a good number of years but was finally replaced last year with the mighty Soulnote E2.

Tomorrow we will look at the turntable and loudspeaker journey.

“Going full TIDAL”, a phrase heard rather frequently around these parts. It’s an easy direction to take, and regular followers will know it happens with some frequency. Beautifully natural sound, elegant slimline aesthetics, unwavering brand integrity and, in our experience, the finest level of reliability we have personally ever experienced in the industry.

Here is an installation we completed last week and it's a great example. The newly updated Contros G2 streamer/dac into Prisma preamplifier and Intra stereo power amp.

The opportunity was also taken to elevate the supporting cast. The customer’s Shunyata Hydra Delta has made way for the flagship Everest-X in shelf configuration, while the PrimaryControl turntable now benefits from the recently launched Antimode Base isolation platform.

The only component absent from these photographs is the Thrax Orpheus phono stage, currently on a short sabbatical for the fitment of a fresh set of valves. In the meantime, a Soulnote E1 steps in admirably to keep the vinyl flowing. All important room acoustic treatments are also currently being decided upon.

Where does this system go from here? There is an easy answer. A pair of TIDAL Contiva G3, almost certainly finished in piano black. Stay tuned for more extensive TIDAL installations very soon.
