"Lovely jubbly! Take a butcher’s at this beauty!" 🎺

Listen, I don’t normally do brass instruments—I’m usually shifting three-wheeled vans—but Paul at Brass Toff has done such a blinding job on this Sovereign cornet, I’m tempted to put it in the showroom next to a Capri Ghia!

Take a look at the first three photos. Honestly? It was looking a bit… well, let’s just say it had seen better days. It was filthier than a back-alley deal in Margate. But Paul? He’s put it through his ultrasonic tank—it’s like magic, I tell ya, cleaner than a whistle!

Picture the scene: Paul arrives at the Brass Toff workshop, thoroughly refreshed from a well-deserved short break away. He opens the door, expecting a calm, organized start to the week.

What is sitting on his bench? A 60-year-old Imperial EEb Bass.

You could practically hear him channelling his inner Basil Fawlty: "Oh, marvelous. A tank. Just what I needed. Perhaps I should just give it a damn good thrashing with a tree branch?"

The Heavy-Duty Reality:
These vintage Imperials are legendary because they were built to survive an apocalypse. They are incredibly heavy, insanely durable, and absolutely refuse to dent easily. Servicing one is less about fine adjustments and more like wrestling a very solid, stubborn wardrobe.

The Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the Workshop! 🏆🎺

We genuinely thought this heavyweight was down for the count last week. It was battered, crumpled, and looking like it had been on the receiving end of a devastating finishing move.

But after a full seven days of going toe-to-toe with Paul’s 40 years of repair mastery, the dents have officially tapped out! What started as a chaotic, structural disaster has emerged completely victorious. Look at that "After" shot—the metal is incredibly smooth, the finish is blindingly shiny, and it no longer looks like it's been folded in half by a rival wrestler. This Tuba has successfully defended its title!

This Tuba didn't just lose the Royal Rumble... it got suplexed from the top rope! 💥🔔

Take a look at this "Before" photo. We see a lot of damaged instruments at Brass Toff, but this absolute heavyweight looks like it went 12 rounds in a steel cage match and ended up on the receiving end of a folding chair.

The Main Event:
Because of the sheer size of the instrument and the horrendous level of damage, we don't have an "After" photo for you today. This isn't a quick fix; Paul is going to be wrestling with this metal behemoth for a solid week to iron out the dents, realign the pipework, and get it ready to re-enter the ring. We will post the results of this epic grapple next week!

From Elliott to the Etihad. !!!

Luis Merrion made a whistle stop tour to the mainland from Guernsey this last week, all in aid of getting his Elliott Trumpet serviced.

Brass Toff was only too willing to push this repair through the workshop ASAP, whilst Luis took in the delights of the Northwest of England.

He visited 3 football stadiums whilst his instrument was in the workshop.

Anfield, Old Trafford and the Ethiad Stadium.

Having not had his Elliott Trumpet serviced for 15 years, it was time to treat it to its own Health Spa.

On collecting his instrument, Luis was thrilled to see the difference after it's makeover.

He now has the arduous journey home, let's hope it's not another 15 years before we see him again.

Phillip Bracegirdle Euphonium player at KNDS Fairey Band brought his instrument in again for its yearly service.

Phil can looking forward to playing it now with reliability as he enters into yet another year of Major contests with his band.

I had the pleasure of working with Phil over a number of years at Wingates Band. Good to see he still has the drive and passion for this most wonderful of hobbies.

The ultrasonic cleaning tank at the Brass Toff workshop often looks a bit like Marineville on a busy day. But instead of Troy Tempest taking Stingray into the depths, this week it was Mike Eccles gorgeous Flugelhorn taking a deep dive!
