Hi everyone, I'm taking the difficult decision to put Beeloved Gifts into hibernation for now. With increasing costs and difficulty sourcing products that are in line with the Beeloved ethos it's the right thing for now.

Thanks for all your support and general loveliness!

An exciting time for beekeepers!

Plenty of pollen coming into the hives this week. The queens are starting to lay and we don't disturb them. Looking forward to adding our first supers of the year and making some splits when we see drones in the colonies.

S is for Swarm!

A word we may be familiar with but have you ever wondered why it happens? A swarm is mass of bees that has left the hive and are seeking a new home. They do this to split their colony as it may have been overcrowded or as there is a new queen.

If you see a swarm, don't panic but if it is bothering you contact a local swarm collector. Here's UK list

Beekeepers are often approached about winged, flying creatures, especially in the spring and summer period, when they are their most active simply working and are no cause for alarm. We can only help if they are honeybees.

R is for Raw Honey.

It is important to check the labels of any honey that you buy. Raw honey is taken directly from the hive without any filtration and placed into its packaging. However, pure honey is taken from the hive and gently filtered to remove all nasties (dirt, pollen, dead bugs), before being packaged.

Honeycomb is a 'raw honey' as nothing is added, taken away or heated.

Beeloved A-Z - Q is for Queen Marking.

The is when a a brightly coloured dot of bee paint is placed on the queen honey bee. This makes it easier for the beekeeper to identify her when inspecting the colony.
