🎄 Hire or purchase? Which approach is right for your Christmas lighting scheme?

There isn't one right answer. It depends on what you're trying to achieve, your budget and how you want to manage your scheme in the years ahead.

Hiring can give you lower upfront costs, spread payments over the contract term, included off-season storage and the opportunity to refresh your display when your contract ends.

Purchasing means your organisation owns the display, giving you the flexibility to reuse, reconfigure and expand your scheme over time. It can also offer longer-term value when you're looking at a display you'll use for years to come.

There are other things to consider too, including maintenance, storage and how much flexibility you want from year to year.

A light trail can be so much more than a collection of illuminated features.

The route, the story, the setting and the atmosphere all play a part in creating an experience that people want to explore.

And it does not have to be a huge, ticketed attraction. From town-centre trails and shop-window discoveries to woodland walks and seasonal experiences, there are plenty of ways to create a journey through a space after dark.

Think a motif only has one way to be used? Think again.

One of the things we love about festive lighting is finding different ways to use products to create something that feels right for a particular space.

Take Taunton's Cross Street, for example.
The motifs used here were originally designed as column motifs, but rather than being attached to columns, they were suspended across the street alongside our 3D Feature Balls to create a completely different application.

It's a great reminder that when you're looking through a catalogue, you don't necessarily have to think “I don't have anywhere to put that.”

⭐ A little look at Horsham's festive lighting scheme...

Horsham District Council and the BID came together with a shared ambition: to create a stunning Christmas experience throughout the town centre -encouraging people to visit, explore the shops, eateries and entertainment, and ultimately keep coming back year after year.

The wider scheme was designed to complement Horsham's historic character, using warm white lighting to create an elegant, welcoming feel throughout the town, alongside themed elements inspired by woodlands and the night sky.

One of the features we created was these 8m-wide 3D Snowgates within The Forum. Three illuminated arches come together to create a tunnel-like experience between the different spaces, providing a striking focal point and, naturally, a great photo opportunity. 📸

It's just one element of a much bigger scheme, but a lovely example of how individual features and groups can work together to create memorable spaces within a town centre.

A little behind-the-scenes look at the development of our hanging motifs 🎀

Before these designs ever became finished pieces, we printed them out at full scale to check the shapes, proportions and, importantly, that the rope light could follow the curves as intended.

We kept one of those original paper mock-ups… so when the finished motif arrived, naturally we had to put the two side by side.

And the result? An almost perfect match. 👀

A very satisfying moment for our design team, and a great example of the detail that goes into bringing a TFLC-designed motif from an idea on screen to a finished product.

What information does a lighting supplier need from you? 💡

If you're planning festive lighting for the first time, it can be difficult to know what you're expected to have ready before approaching a supplier.

The good news? You don't need to have the whole scheme figured out.

A few things that can be helpful include:

📍 Where you'd like to install lighting — streets, trees, lampposts, buildings or other areas.

📸 Photos or plans of the locations — even a few initial photos can help give your supplier some context. Approximate measurements are also

🎄 What you'd like to achieve — perhaps you're looking for a traditional feel, something more contemporary, or simply want to make a particular area feel more festive.

💷 Your budget — if you have one in mind, this helps your supplier understand what's realistic and where your budget could have the most impact.

📅 Your timescale — knowing when you need the scheme installed is useful when planning the project.

And if you don't know some of these things yet? That's okay. A good lighting supplier should be able to help you work through what's needed.
