This feels like dajavo because its not the first time I have lost some of my dahlias because they got frost damage and went to mush. A few years ago I stored around 100 dahlia tubers in my greenhouse overwinter naively thinking they would survive -11 weather. Then the slugs ate them last year and then this year I left them in the ground and only 1/3rd survived.

They are real divas and I would not grow them if everyone didnt love them. There you go I said it!

Even though my baby plants are now desperate to be planted in the ground i have decided to delay it because we have a mini heatwave wave coming here in Mid Wales over the weekend and it will be to hot for them; likely scorching their leaves

Enjoy the sunshine whatever your doing🌞

Who is with me on this?!

Sweet pea stems are easily snapped and so keeping a close eye on them as they grow and tying any wayward stems loosely onto their support is key to protecting them against this. When you have got them this far the last thing you want is for the stems to fall and break.

It will not be long before the sweet peas are flowering here and I can't wait.

The bluebells in our garden somehow do not feel like they belong to me. They were bought here many years ago by Bill, the previous owner, who lived here for decades and has sadly now passed away. His daughter enjoyed them as she was growing up for many years, and her daughter too.
A letter came from his daughter a year or two ago that explained that Bill's granddaughter remembers the bluebells very fondly and if I would not mind could I send her some, and how could I not. They will always be Bill's granddaughters bluebells to me.

As they now start to fade for another year, i just thought I would share a picture just incase she sees this.
Until next year, thank you for the show, you have been a joy

After a difficult day I found myself in my flower room cutting and gathering flowers to make this table arrangement. Who knew It would be just the tonic that I needed.

This sumptuous bowl of soft pink clematis and aquilegia would make the prettiest of wedding table flowers.

Its not easy to create wedding bouquets and flowers when you can't get an overview of them.
By holding a bouquet to a mirror we get to see how it really looks with height, flower placement and any gaps etc.

Give it a try when your putting flowers together next, you'll be surprised at how much easier it is!

This is how I created 10 new beds for this year's planting season.

Step 1. In the autumn 2025, around October I cut the grass low where I wanted to create my new beds. My paths are being left grassed so I measured out 3ftx20ft planting beds.

Step 2. I Layed down cardboard that will completely block out the light and wet the cardboard on first laying it. You can also use non permeable plastic or tarpaulin which will need to be removed when the grass has died.

Step 3. Leave overwinter to kill off the grass underneath, atleast 6 months.

Step 4. By March you should find that the cardboard has started to break down into the soil and most of the grass has died.
Keep a check on how things are going and If you need to re-cover with more cardboard because the grass is slow to die you can do this, which can be left on the bed and covered in compost. If using plastic or tarpaulin this will need to be removed before putting on compost.

Step 5. You need to give a final tug of the stubborn weeds and then you are ready to fill your beds with compost. it doesn’t matter to much what brand, although you will need one that is suitable for young plants and not, for example seed starting. Better still would be to use some or all of your own made compost, which has been possible for me this year on some of my beds. A good layer of compost is needed and if you have any deep rooting plants then make a hole in the cardboard

Step 6, Once the risk of frost has past get planting! You may be able to plant a little earlier if the weather is mild but you will need to cover your plants if there is a risk of frost, unless they are extremely hardy. If you have any deep rooting plants then make a hole in the cardboard before planting.

Do ask if you have any questions in the comments or dm me; You can ask me anything.
