This Sunday (5 July) we welcome Chiltern Writers to Real Magic Books with three of their authors reading from new work, hosted by Geoff Price.

Alastair McIver, writer and journalist, will talk about his Roza Beshimov political crime trilogy. Tony Flower will read a passage from his fifth novel, Your Past Will Follow. A bizarre and engaging ‘Long Lost Family’ style tale that travels all the way from the UK to Downtown Chicago. And Mags Crook will reveal details of her soon to be published first book, featuring the adventures of the inhabitants of the fictional village of Addenford.

Doors from 1600, come and support your local book shop and authors✨

Chiltern Writers Group is for anyone from across Buckinghamshire and the Thames Valley with an interest in writing.

‘Writing can be a lonely occupation – but not if you are a member of Chiltern Writers. We are a friendly group who welcome all writers from beginner to published professional. While we have a number of experienced writers in the group, you don’t need to be published to be a member. All you need is an interest in writing.

Some of our members are beginners while others have been writing for a long time. While some of our members aim to be published, many write simply for their own pleasure. Our members’ interests cover almost every aspect of writing including novels, poetry, short stories, non-fiction, blogging, magazine features and newspaper columns.’

New event! Peter Chappell joins us on Thursday 23 July to discuss What If Reform Wins: A Scenario.

‘The must-read UK politics book of the summer’ The Guardian

Tickets: https://wegottickets.com/f/23015

A compulsive, chilling nonfiction thriller that imagines what could happen if Reform win a majority at the next general election.

‘A gripping and important book’ Andrew Marr

At 10pm on 28th June 2029, exit polls predict that Nigel Farage will be the 60th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. This is the story of what could happen next.

What If Reform Wins is a chilling and deeply researched scenario that takes us day-by-day, minute-by-minute through a world in which Reform has the opportunity to put their policies into practice, from deporting 600,000 people to leaving the ECHR, abandoning net zero and ending the BBC’s license fee. How will people fight back against mass deportations and fracking? And will this self-described ‘ill-disciplined pirate ship’ survive the rigors of government? Drawing on dozens of new interviews, Peter Chappell, a reporter at The Times, explores a nation on a new and dystopian path.

‘By turns entertaining and downright terrifying’ The Telegraph

Our book of the day and our next fiction book group title. Lázár by Nelio Beidermann. A ‘sweeping epic’ that charts the story of the Lázár family from the beginning of the twentieth century to the Hungarian uprising of 1956. Excited to read this and discuss with our book group on Wednesday 24 June.

Book of the day, the gripping non fiction thriller, What If Reform Wins - A Scenario by Peter Chappell

I recommend picking this up before next week’s local elections. Maybe leave a copy or two around the place.

‘We all need to take this scenario very seriously’ Anthony Seldon

‘A dazzling imagined account of Nigel Farage’s first year in Number Ten… Spoiler alert: it doesn’t end well’

‘Brilliant’ Daniel Finkelstein

Old Magic!✨We are now gratefully accepting pre-loved books at the shop. We would love any special old paperbacks, mid century fiction and non fiction, vintage children’s bits, curiosities and esoterica, 70s weirdness, cool 80s, lovely books on nature, politics, philosophy, poetry and more. You know the sort of things we dig! If you have a box of books you’re wanting to get rid of and you think that we might like them then do pop them by.

We are curating an Old Magic section in the shop and would love your donations. If it’s not right for us we’ll make sure it finds a home. This is a great way to support Real Magic and we’re excited to see what bits come through the doors. Feel free to get in touch if you have a collection you want to sell too, can’t promise we’ll be able to buy everything but we’re happy to have a chat. Thanks all x
