Spadework is a charity that was founded in 1984 that enables people to be more independent, feel less isolated and live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives. Our aim is to support trainees to develop their personal skills through social interaction with the community and experience of working in a commercial environment as they help to run our plant nursery, garden centre, log deliveries, farm shop and café.

✨Happy Volunteers’ Week!✨

This week we want to take a moment to say a truly heartfelt THANK YOU to every single one of our amazing volunteers here at Spadework.

From supporting our Trainee sessions and Dementia and Wellbeing groups, to helping in the Café, Farm Shop, Garden Centre and Charity Shop, our volunteers give up their time, energy and kindness to help others and make a difference.

So many of the smiles, conversations, friendships, opportunities and moments of support that happen here each day are made possible because of the people who choose to volunteer with us. Your patience, encouragement and willingness to help never goes unnoticed, and we know just how lucky we are to have such a wonderful team of volunteers.

Thank you for everything you do, for always going the extra mile and for helping make Spadework such a welcoming, supportive, and special place for so many people. We honestly couldn’t do it without you!🩷

Join us for our Charity Cider & Apple Juice Tasting with Charringtons! 🍎🍺

We’re excited to be welcoming Charringtons to Spadework for a relaxed and enjoyable evening of cider and apple juice tasting this June. Guests will have the opportunity to sample a range of delicious local drinks, learn a little more about them and enjoy a lovely evening together.

After this week’s hot weather, we think you’ve earned a little treat!🍓☀️

Our Farm Shop is stocked with delicious local Hugh Lowe Farms strawberries, alongside tasty Taywell Ice Creams and Simply Ice Cream ice creams, perfect for cooling down in the sunshine this weekend.

And your four-legged friends don’t need to miss out either, as we also have a range of Doggy ice creams available too!

So whether you’re planning a picnic, enjoying the garden or simply making the most of the sunshine, why not pop in and treat yourself whilst supporting your local charity too?!

This week is National Children’s Gardening Week!🌻🪴

Did you know we have lots of children’s gardening goodies available in our Charity Garden Centre to help little ones start exploring the joys of gardening?

From gloves and tools to watering cans, gardening kits and seeds, we have everything they need to get stuck in, learn something new and enjoy spending time outdoors this summer.

Gardening is such a lovely way to encourage creativity, confidence and curiosity, whilst helping children learn more about nature and the world around them.

So why not pop down this weekend and help inspire the next generation of gardeners? ✨

From the veg patch to the kitchen… our Trainees have been making the most of our homegrown produce this week!🥗🌿

The group have been busy creating a range of delicious dishes using ingredients grown and harvested right here on site, including fresh salads made with our own salad leaves, radishes and beetroot, as well as baking homemade rhubarb cake using rhubarb grown in our veg patch.

It’s always so lovely to see the teamwork between different groups across site and the journey from growing and harvesting produce, to preparing and enjoying it together within the kitchen.

As part of our Wellbeing Services, our much-loved Time to Grow programme is returning this June, giving people the opportunity to enjoy our peaceful site, spend time in nature and connect with other like-minded people within our beautiful gardens.🌱💗

Across the 8-week programme, no two sessions are the same! From sowing seeds and potting up, to pruning, building raised beds and making compost, there are lots of opportunities to get involved at your own pace whilst enjoying the wellbeing benefits of gardening and being outdoors.

And of course… there’s always time for tea, cake and a chat too. ☕🍰✨

It’s been another busy week for our Trainees! They have been making the most of the sunshine whilst keeping cool with plenty of well-earned shade breaks along the way!🌿☀️

From mowing the grass and tidying up around site, to harvesting our homegrown beetroot, salad leaves and radishes, there has been lots to keep everybody busy. The Trainees have also been hard at work weeding and pruning along our Woodland Walk too.

There’s always lots to keep our Trainees busy throughout the gardens during the summer months, and it’s been lovely to see everybody enjoying spending time outdoors and taking pride in the amazing work they do around site!

☀️Bank Holiday Monday is here and we’re open today from 9am to 5pm!☀️

Whether you’re popping down for a sunny breakfast in the Café, browsing the Garden Centre for some new plants, or grabbing an ice cream from the Shop to keep cool in the sunshine… we’d love to welcome you to Spadework today!

Bank holiday weekends are always incredibly important for small charities like ours. These busy weekends bring vital support to Spadework and every single person who chooses to visit, shop, eat or spend time with us genuinely helps make a difference.

Every coffee served in the Café, every plant bought from the Garden Centre and every gift picked up from the Shop helps us continue supporting people living with dementia, adults with learning and other disabilities, people experiencing problems with their mental health, those navigating bereavement and carers within our community.

However, behind every purchase is something more than a transaction, it’s an impact. It helps create opportunities, friendships, wellbeing support, confidence building and moments of joy for so many people.

So, if you’re out and about enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine today, why not pop in and see us. Your support really does mean the world to us and we are so grateful to everyone who continues to support Spadework.✨

Our Garden Centre is full to the brim with everything you need to transform your garden this weekend, with lots of beautiful plants, hanging baskets and gardening goodies ready to take home.

This Bank Holiday weekend is one of our busiest times of the year, and every visit, purchase and bit of support really does mean so much to us.
