We really need to visit soon!

First our bells — now our history.
The BBC can’t seem to stay away from Westerham!

Only a few weeks ago their cameras were in St Mary’s filming our very own Westerham Clangers
and now they’ve been back, this time with a microphone, as the BBC Sounds podcast ‘Secret Kent’ turns its attention to the Westerham Foundlings.

Did you know Westerham once cared for some of the most vulnerable children in Georgian England? It’s one of our town’s best-kept secrets.

In 1739 Thomas Coram founded the London Foundling Hospital, the country’s very first children’s charity. Two decades later, a branch opened right here in Westerham — in a house whose name you’ll almost certainly recognise, long before its most famous resident ever moved in.

469 children passed through its doors. Many of their mothers left behind a small token in the hope of one day being reunited. What became of those children — and whether those hopes were ever met — is a story worth hearing in full.

The National Trust’s Claire Vincent and local history researcher Alethea Mitchell sit down with BBC Sounds producer Steve Ladner to bring these young lives back into the light.

Settle in and have a listen — Search BBC Sounds for ‘Secret Kent’.

Then come and see the story for yourself at the free ‘Story of the Westerham Foundlings’ exhibition, now open in the Coach House at Quebec House.

With thanks to Quebec House and Coram.
