Atkey and Co

Atkey and Co Each researched design is authentic, sourced from exemplars of architectural heritage within London and the South East. We also provide design services.

Atkey and Company are British makers of bespoke architectural joinery, offering a catalogue of authentic, accurately reproduced doors and mouldings from the best known periods of British architecture, each complete with its historical context. Atkey and Company are makers of fine quality bespoke doors and timber mouldings using designs from the Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Arts and Crafts, and E

dwardian periods. Our Contemporary Collection combines modern aesthetics with a selection of the best of period designs to produce a range of contemporary doors. Details matter and we apply the same attentiveness to proportion and design as for our period collections. Our joinery is bespoke, handmade by our joinery team in Somerset to the highest standards of production. When involved in the reinstatement of original detail, the refurbishment or sensitive extension of historic buildings, or the design of new buildings the Atkey catalogue enables designers, architects and homeowners to specify appropriate, elegant and well-proportioned architectural joinery. Because each item within the Atkey archive can be traced to an original example, the catalogue can also be viewed as a work of reference that provides a sound basis for design and encourages a closer adherence to authentic period joinery created by the masters from the past.

From our first technical drawing to the final manufacturing of a product, we are sticklers for making "period-perfect" doors, architraves, skirtings and other timber mouldings. That's because we believe that any property deserves the right architectural joinery in it. Not simply a finely shaped timber product, but a piece that perfectly reflects the style and status of the property and the period of its construction. If you care about authenticity for your project, you need to speak to the experts. Call Michael Costello on 01934 806883.

Atkey are currently involved with the extensive refurbishment of a Grade 2* listed house very close to the lovely Marble Hill shown here. This is an easily overlooked house, but one that is well worth a visit. Designed in part by its owner Henrietta Howard in the 1720’s and despite various phases of works and restorations its interiors read as largely intact and contemporary with the Palladian exterior, highly fashionable when new. There is a large variety of carved architraves, skirting boards, dado rails, door and panel mouldings in the reception areas. Notably, the main staircase with carved details and the first floor floorboards are made from mahogany, possibly the first use of mahogany in English architecture, the timber brought from Belize by King George II as a gift to Henrietta who was his mistress.
