The lovely Anna Brooke popped in and signed her books! Her new book Murder Unwrapped is out in November... 🍫

πŸ“– In this new adventure, Murder Unwrapped, Coco and Louis face street urchin ghosts, a hot air balloon, and a revenge plot dating all the way back to the French Revolution. Can the children save the competition and unwrap the mystery, before the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Eve? More humour, mystery and (of course) chocolate – just in time for Christmas. Book 2 in the Coco Bean Investigates series begins with Death by Chocolate.

Did you join us for our sold out event at Wetherby wine bar Once Upon A Vine? 🍷 It's just a stone's throw from !

For our first Read Between the Wines event, led a discussion about The Wedding People by Alison Espach - the heart-warming novel follows a professor who travels to a seaside luxury hotel at the lowest point of her life; there she encounters a wedding party that changes her perspective about life and love.

The lively discussion was accompanied by Rich from the wine bar introducing two delicious tasting wines.

An alternative to our tea and biscuits β˜•οΈ book club held at the shop, grab a glass AND Tracy Chevalier's The Glass Maker for our next event on 14th September.

πŸ“š 1,114 BOOKS.

That’s the EXTRA number of books the average independent bookshop will need to sell every year just to cover rising business rates.

Huge thanks to for hosting us and bringing this story to life so powerfully in their shop, and the on Sunday for covering the issue (link in bio).

New analysis shows the scale of the pressure facing independent bookshops in England:
β€’ Over 400 shops (those not eligible for Small Business Rates Relief) facing average annual increases of Β£4,563
β€’ Total aggregated business rates burden on bookshops rising by 45.1% by 2029/30 (from Β£4.14m to over Β£6m)

On average, this means a bookshop must sell over 1,100 extra book sales every year just to stand still - a major challenge on already tight margins.

This risks reducing investment in shops, community outreach, and high street vibrancy, with bookshop businesses potentially at risk.

We’re calling for:
βœ” Permanent business rates relief
βœ” Reform of the SBRR cliff edge
βœ” Index-linked thresholds
βœ” Better Resourcing of the Valuation Office Agency

Independent bookshops are vital to our culture and communities - they deserve business rates that allow them to thrive, not fight to survive.
