Do you know that feeling when you really want a snack.
And you ask your mom nicely for one, just like she has taught you, and she goes to get it for you and you can’t wait to eat it.
But then she brings you the wrong one. It’s the red snack. And you hate the red one. You absolutely hate it! And you try to tell her it’s the wrong one, and she sighs at you and tells you that the red one is your favourite. But it’s not. You know it’s not. You hate it!
So she makes another big sigh and brings you another one. It’s the green snack. It’s wrong! It’s so wrong! You don’t want the green snack. It’s the wrong snack!
You don’t know which snack you want, but you know that you want a snack. And that makes you feel so terribly angry, but also terribly sad at the same time. You feel that nothing else matters but the snack. And you got the wrong snack. It’s the wrong snack!!
And you fall to the ground in your sadness and in your anger and your voice is shouting for snacks and your arms are banging away on the floor. And you think you might just be the unhappiest you have ever been. Waves of sadness are making you cry big salty tears that blur your vision and waves of anger are making you scream till your voice hurts. And you feel hot and overwhelmed and confused and alone.
And mom raises her voice at you, tells you to stop screaming. But you can’t stop yourself. You’re too upset. You feel like you’ve lost control of your body and that makes you even more upset. And now you’re crying and you don’t remember what you wanted in the first place, but you know you have never been more sad. Maybe ever.
And mom crouches down next to you and opens her arms. And you know that her arms will make everything better, and you feel drawn towards them. You suddenly want nothing more than to be held by her. Let her fix your sadness.
And you get up from the floor and let her put her healing arms around you. And you cry into her shoulder. Her soothing mom smell and calming voice immediately releases another flood of tears. But the tears feel different this time. Better somehow. They feel less sad and more relieved. You feel less alone now.
And she is telling you how sad you are that you didn’t get the snack you wanted. Her voice is warm and tickly against your ear. And somehow it feels so much better now that she explains it to you. And you nod your head and wipe your snotty nose in her shirt so it leaves a sticky mess. But mom doesn’t seem to mind.
And you feel your whole body letting go of the anger and the sadness. You feel it shake out of you, and you feel your tears coming to a stop.
And she is looking at you now, an encouraging smile on her face. She uses a finger to wipe away the rest of your tears. One teardrop rests on her fingertip and you both look at it curiously. “Say bye to the tear drop!” Mom says and you say bye to it as she brushes it off in her snotty shirt. And your sadness disappears just like that. Just like the teardrop did. Like it was never there to begin with.
And mom holds up the two snacks. One green and one red. “Which one?” She asks.
And you like that she gives you a choice. It makes you feel big and important and special. You choose the red one. You love the red one. It might just be the best snack in the whole world.
