After taking a break from social media since April for personal reasons, we’re pleased to say that Wind and Willow is back.

Thank you to everyone who has checked in on us and for your patience while we’ve been offline—it has meant a great deal.

We’re looking forward to filling our pages once again with beautiful new stock, gift ideas, and all the little things that make Wind and Willow special. We can’t wait to catch up with you all and welcome you back.

As a local business owner here in Whitby, I wanted to share something that’s been on my mind.

It can be quite disheartening to read comments describing the town as “run down,” “like Tumble town” or a shanty town,” or saying there are “no decent shops left” and “nothing worth coming for anymore.” I completely understand that parts of the town — particularly Baxtergate — are looking a little tired at the moment, and the number of empty units is noticeable. There is certainly room for improvement, and perhaps more could be done in terms of tidying, supporting businesses, and reviewing the wider issue of business rates that affect so many high streets across the country.

However, Whitby is so much more than one or two streets.

Beyond Baxtergate and Church Street, if you take a few extra steps and wander along the side streets — Brunswick Street, Silver Street, Skinner Street for example — you’ll find an incredible range of independent shops and hidden gems. These are businesses run by hardworking local people who care deeply about what they do and about this town. Crafts & Haberdashery in Whitby The Pot and Pineapple Whitby The Whitby Witch Little Whitby Potter for example

Many of us are working tirelessly behind the scenes, navigating rising rents, increasing costs, and competition from large online retailers such as Amazon, Temu and Shein (who contribute nothing to the local economy) all while trying to provide a personal, welcoming shopping experience for visitors and locals alike. Independent businesses are what give Whitby its character, warmth and individuality.

It’s absolutely fair to have constructive conversations about how we can improve and support our town. But please don’t write off the whole of Whitby because of one or two streets. There is still so much here to discover, support and celebrate.

If you haven’t explored beyond the main routes recently, I’d gently encourage you to take a wander — you might just be surprised by what you find 😊
