Good Morning and welcome to Thursday in sunny Whitehaven - the bookshop is open till 4pm.
The power being off yesterday allowed some of the staff a rare mid-week day off - they took advantage of the weather too and walked round Ennerdale - despite the dry spell it was looking great. One of west Cumbria's many unspoilt gems to visit.

Please note on Wednesday 12th August frustratingly the bookshop will be closed due to a planned power cut - but we'll be back open as usual Thursday.

Good Morning it's Monday and the sun is shining in Whitehaven - the bookshop is open till 4pm.
Rough Class, Schooling and Rioting - the growth of a Cumbrian Town [Cleator Moor] 1865-1905.
The flow of Irish immigrants to West Cumberland in the second half of the nineteenth century was remarkable. Many settled in the bustling iron ore mining centre of Cleator Moor. Rough Class uses entries in a school log book as prompts to explore the sometimes turbulent history of the town then.

A date for your diary Danny Flynn Gallery 9 King Street is launching a book on Saturday 8th August - the exhibition will run from the 6th August till the 29th. Limited Edition book, details to follow asap.

Good Morning it's tuesday and the bookshop is open till 4pm.
A local literary connection and a 300 year anniversary.
A Tale Of A Tub by Jonathan Swift printed in 1726* [Sold] was printed 300 years - Swift who is best known for writing Gulliver's Travels lived in Whitehaven in the 1660s and there is a plaque and celebratory mural in Washington Square.
The house in which he lived as an infant is high up near the Candlestick chimney, above the harbour- perhaps to a child the elevated viewpoint inspired the lilliputian idea? here in Whitehaven.
*The same year as the first printing of Gulliver's Travels.
History is of course all relative - but it is still a fascinating fact that Gulliver's Travels was published 50 years before the formation of the United States - and also how much Whitehaven has developed since it was looked upon by that young boy in the early 1660s.
