Emily Lucas writes as someone well acquainted with anxiety and exhaustion from painful personal experience. Despite presenting as an extrovert who appeared to have everything together, she was masking the spiritual reality of a superficial existence - until she read Richard Sibbes, a 17th century Anglican minister, whose words helped her to stop trying to make everything better in her own strength and rest in Christ for real spiritual transformation.

In this short book (and with great honesty) she explores themes such as contentment, how shame and unworthiness can lead us to attempt to fake it, how to slow down and recover spiritually and emotionally from the busyness and distractions of modern life, where to find resilience, and how to live and enjoy a deeper and more fulfilling walk with God.

A good feature of this book is that each chapter contains prayers, questions, and suggestions for further reading which help the reader meditate on and apply what’s been said.

This book is written primarily for women but anyone who picks this up and reads it will certainly be blessed and encouraged - I know I was and I strongly recommend it!

It considers the difficult subject of anxiety and depression in the Christian life, which are “not merely theoretical struggles; they are lived realities that affect the mind, body, and soul”.

Written from the perspective of a pastor who has had his own personal struggles with anxiety and depression, and who offers regular pastoral counsel, Garriott sets out to provide readers with the “tools to live faithfully through debilitating anxiety”.

In six chapters he explores:
- the nature of anxiety and depression;
- examples to follow from famous Christians of the past;
- how God uses these things for our good;
- motivation to press on in faith;
- how to find help through deeper communion with Christ;
- how to find comfort from having an eternal perspective.

The book concludes with two short sections on practices and prayers, which are full of wisdom from the Bible, to help sufferers put some helpful rhythms into their daily routines.
