Morakniv carving knives are well known as some of the best carving knives for beginners. That said, plenty of experienced carvers still carry them as staple tools in their tool rolls, which should tell you all you need to know!

They're affordable, well-designed tools with excellent steel and edge retention, so there really isn't another knife we'd suggest ahead of them for someone starting out.

That said, there are two main models - the 106 and the 120 - and within those, two different steel options: carbon and laminated carbon. So which should you choose?

In this video, Izzy covers the differences and offers some guidance on which knife might be right for you.

The answer? With some simple objects, tools and household chemicals… and a small amount of belligerence.

Secateurs by Felco 🌿

Not a tool we shout about all that often, but felt it was time we should! We sharpen a lot of secateurs in the shop and are always happy when we see Felco placed on our counter - a satisfying tool to sharpen as they hold a really fantastic edge.

Well made, ergonomic in the hand, a reliable tool for pruning, basketry and general garden and woodland work.

A few spaces still remain on a day long course led by Maurice Pyle on 11th July at the wonderful Ellekers Woods in North Yorkshire - Introduction to Green Woodworking Tools & Skills.

This introductory course guides participants in developing confidence and foundational skills with a variety of traditional hand tools and devices - including axes, carving knives, saws, drawknives, and the green woodworker’s good friend, the shave horse.

By the end of the day, participants will leave with a mallet and chopping block - essential additions to any green woodworker’s workshop. Their creation also importantly provides the opportunity to explore a wide range of hand tools and core skills. This course is ideal for complete beginners looking to gain practical experience, develop essential techniques, and build confidence. It’s the perfect gateway into the world of green woodworking and a strong foundation for more intermediate and advanced courses to come.

At Woodsmith, we care a lot about getting the tools we sell right.

A big part of that is working closely with toolmakers to develop, test and refine designs and materials before the tools are put out into the world.

Feel like your Silky Saw just isn’t cutting like it used to? 🥺

Whilst edge retention on Silkys is exceptional thanks to their razor-sharp, impulse-hardened teeth, it might be time to replace the blade!

Billy shows you just how easy it is on this Gomtaro saw 🪚
