The shave horse is a quick grip and release clamp used in green woodworking to hold wood in place whilst you shape with hand tools, most commonly used along side a drawknife. As your feet press forward on the treadle, the billet is held in place; as you release, the billet is free to be quickly turned as you remove stock 🌿

New and improved Woodsmith Log Dogs! 🪵🐕

The Woodsmith Log Dog is used to hold a log securely in position while it’s hewn with an axe, taking it from a raw round log to a square timber. The dog features a parallel end that’s driven into the support beam, and a perpendicular end that’s embedded into the log being hewn.

After a lot (we mean, a lot) of stress testing and prototype development, we designed these lawg dawgs in collaboration with local blacksmithing ledge , just up the road in Blyth - who hand-forged every single one.

Now made from thicker 20mm square bar and 500mm in length, with 120mm dogs.

A dedicated ‘stick chopping’ tool from Ray Iles.

Do we think you need a specialist stick chopper over a froe or an axe? Not necessarily. But we’ve decided to stock this after speaking to a number of forest school leaders who primarily use their billhooks with a mallet for splitting wood. We feel this is a better alternative for those who prefer the handling and control of a billhook-style tool, while being specifically designed for splitting and being struck with a mallet.

Made from spring steel, it has the same spine as a Ray Iles froe, meaning it is designed to be struck on the spine and is therefore more durable for this type of use. Its handling is similar to a billhook, making it a familiar option for those who prefer that style of tool.

It may also appeal to anyone who doesn’t feel as comfortable using a hatchet for splitting kindling.

We recommend using this tool for splitting billets up to around 5–6" in diameter. Available at woodsmith.co.uk/ray-iles 🌿
