Haighβs Woodland Railway celebrates its 40th anniversary π
Pictured on the opening day in 1986, Haighβs Woodland Railway has been a much loved attraction for four decades, creating treasured memories for generations.
Over the years, thousands of visitors have enjoyed the 1.8km journey through the woodland, making the railway one of Haighβs most iconic attractions.
Recent investment from Wigan Council has supported a major restoration programme, including essential engineering and drainage improvements, the installation of new track and sleepers, and the restoration and repainting of two of the railwayβs cherished carriages.
The project has been made possible thanks to the incredible dedication of Woodland Railway volunteers, who have contributed 1,712 hours of their time this year alone.
Corporate volunteering days have also played a key role, with teams from across Wigan Council and organisations including The Co-operative Bank contributing a further 249 hours to support the redevelopment.
The beloved 15-inch gauge railway is expected to re-open in 2027, once track repairs are complete, allowing families to once again enjoy the Woodland Railway.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the restoration of the Woodland Railway, we canβt wait to welcome you back soon! π
