The Bookshop

The Bookshop Award losing owner of Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop in Wigtown, Scotland's Book Town. It had a picture of a rabbit on the back.

Author of Diary of a Bookseller, Confessions of a Bookseller, Remainders of the Day and Seven Kinds of People you find in Bookshops. We have about 100,000 titles in stock, but probably not the one you're looking for. You know, your aunt gave it to you when you were a child and it had a red cover but you can't remember the title or the author. If we work out what it is and we tell you we don't have

it in stock, just keep telling us about it and we will, of course, magically make it appear from thin air.

'How much is this book, there's no price.'
There wasn't a price. Feeling generous, said £6.
Customer moaned a bit and looked at it for a while before deciding 'Too expensive'.

I can't think of a single occasion when a customer who has been told the price of an unpriced book - no matter how cheap - has reacted 'Oooh, that's good value, I'll take it.'

Just spotted this engraving of Wigtown bowling green in 1824.

Well, after inadvertently inviting the pent up rage of honest, decent, taxpaying, god fearing motorhome owners into my life (and the numerous email and other threats that came with that), I'm now going to risk accidentally offending another group of people, and hope that they're not quite so angry.

Do you like whistling? Do you do it in shops? And do you think that other people enjoy listening to it?

Admit it, you were all thinking it.

One of many annoying things that seems to happen almost every day - customer brings a book to the counter and asks for a discount because there's a mark on the cover.

Yes, thank you, we noticed that, and that's why it is the price that it is. We've already reduced it because of that.

Latest draft of the next book is with the publisher. Up to date author photo required. Thinking of going with this.

Deadline for the penultimate draft of the next book is Friday. Just a few dozen more Post It notes to go.

Beautiful Sunday afternoon in Girvan. I will be ruining the peace and tranquility by wittering on for an hour at 2 p.m. in the unlikely event that you’re in the ‘hood.

Just in, bought this morning. Hopefully I’ll manage at least one post this week that doesn’t upset anyone.
