I’m well known around these parts for teaching lots of lovely folk how to crochet, running lots of fabulously creative crochet workshops and spending my days designing loads of new ways to feed your crochet addiction! If you’re looking for someone to teach you to crochet; whether you’ve never held a hook before or your gran tried to teach you 20 years ago and you’ve forgotten some of it, then look no further – I’m the woman for you. I’ve taught over 400 people to crochet in the last few years and have plenty of tricks up my sleeve for the bits you find tricky. I’m also an ex primary school teacher so I have the patience of a saint! Perhaps you’re a dab hand at the crochet already, maybe you’re looking to improve your skills, or just want some new friends to crochet with – book onto a crochet workshop or two and get creative with some like minded crafters. After a couple of hours with yours truly in the crochet cabin, stuffed full of tea/coffee and biscuits, you’ll be feeling super chilled out and relaxed, and will leave with a real sense of achievement (along with the pattern to make more, some new friends and a bag of goodies!)

Sometimes it’s just easier to show you in a video rather than writing it down!

I’ll be back at The Melksham Makers' Market this Saturday with a stall full of things I probably shouldn’t be putting in front of people who already have enough crochet projects 😂

There’ll be crochet kits, stitch markers, Pattern Pals, Hook Hints and lots of other Larry-made crochet bits and pieces to have a nose at.

It’s also our last outdoor Makers’ Market of the year before we head indoors for the Christmas market in November, so come along and say hello!

Not every crochet project has to take weeks
this one certainly doesn’t. 🍂

Quite a few of you have been surprised by just how quickly this Autumn Wreath Crochet Kit comes together.

You finish your project, reach for your darning needle to sew in the ends
 and it’s disappeared...again!

That’s exactly where these little wooden Needle Minders come in.

Pop the magnetic minder onto your fabric or project and your needle sits safely on top, rather than vanishing into the sofa, rolling onto the floor or giving you an unexpected stab in the leg!

They’re made from birch laserply here at The Secret Crocheter HQ and come in four shapes: heart, flower, star or circle.

For the crocheters who read an instruction and think, 'But WHERE exactly am I putting my hook?!'

For the ones who want another photo. And probably another one after that 😂

For the ones who sometimes just need to actually see someone doing it before it suddenly makes sense.

I spent 16 years as a primary school teacher and I think that probably explains a lot about the way I write my crochet patterns now. One of the biggest things teaching taught me was that just because someone doesn’t understand something the first time, it doesn’t mean they can’t do it. Sometimes it just needs explaining in a different way.

So I don’t write my patterns assuming you already know all the crochet-y stuff. I include loads of pictures, videos to help with the trickier bits and instructions written a bit like a recipe, because I want you to feel like I’m there showing you what to do next.

No judgement. No assuming you should already know. And wonky stitches are absolutely allowed. 😂

If you’re anything like me, there’s something about autumn that makes you want a new crochet project on the go!

These little basket kits are a really lovely seasonal make, especially if you fancy something a bit different from your usual hats, scarves or blankets.

You can choose the acorn-inspired A Corny Little Basket, the toadstool-style A Fungi Little Basket, or make both if you can’t pick a favourite.

I’ve included the cord, printed pattern and wooden tag in each kit, so you can get straight into the enjoyable bit: making it.

🎃 FREE CROCHET PATTERN! 🎃

If you fancy a quick little autumn project, my Mini Pumpkin Garland pattern is completely FREE!

This is very much my kind of crochet. It’s quick, it’s easy, it looks far more impressive than the effort involved 😂 AND it’s a brilliant excuse to raid your yarn stash and finally use some of those little leftover balls you’ve been keeping for
 well, who knows what really?!

You don’t have to stick with orange either. Mustard, rust, cream, green
have a rummage and see what you’ve got.

The pattern is written in my usual recipe-style format, so you can simply work through it step by step, with plenty of pictures to help along the way too. No complicated instructions, no enormous project commitment...just a lovely little make you can actually finish and hang up afterwards 🧡

There are a few things I hear ALL the time in my crochet workshops


“Sorry, I’m really slow.”

“Sorry, mine doesn’t look like yours.”

“Sorry, I’ve forgotten what you just showed me.”

“Sorry, I think I’ve done it wrong.”

“Sorry, can you show me again?”

And there’s one word in all of those that I’d quite like us to get rid of


SORRY.

Can we please stop apologising for LEARNING?!

You’re not supposed to know how to do something you’re still learning to do. You’re not supposed to remember everything the first time someone shows you. If you did, I'd have nothing to do at the workshop!

I spent 16 years as a teacher before The Secret Crocheter became my full-time job, and if there’s one thing I know, it’s that learning involves getting things wrong. Asking questions. Trying again. Forgetting. Being shown again. And sometimes being shown again and AGAIN.

That’s not being rubbish at crochet, that's just all part of learning.

So if you ever come to one of my crochet workshops, ask me to show you again. Make mistakes. Crochet at your own speed. Make yours look completely different to mine.

But there's no need to apologise for it 🧡
