And that's that.

Yesterday was my last day as a bookseller at Waterstones Wi******er High Street.

Just wish to repeat what I expressed in an earlier post; what a joy and a privilege it was to to work among books and help, and perhaps on occasion inspire, people like yourselves.

My (now former) colleagues will carry on providing that help and inspiration and I'm sure the High Street shop will continue to be the place you go to for all your literary needs.

And to repeat again from that earlier post; anyone interested in what I'll be doing from now please keep an eye on:

Announcement from Bob Smith, Wi******er High Street bookseller.

Hello all,

Yesterday, 05 January 2023, I handed in my official resignation notice. My last day in the shop will be Wednesday 15 March 2023.

I must hasten to add that this was something that was planned a year ago and I'm leaving the employ of Waterstones on good terms.

This March will mark 20 years working as a bookseller, starting in Waterstones Eastleigh (when it was still an Ottakers bookshop) and then at the Wi******er High Street shop for the past 10 years.

The month will, also, contain a significant birthday (one with a zero in it) for me.

It has been an enjoyable 20 years for me. Working in a bookshop is one of best jobs going and it’s been a pleasure, and privilege, to have been a bookseller. And out of those many pleasures what stands out for me is having helped so many young people (and some not so young) start out on a life of reading. Reading, not only as way to learn about the world but to imaginatively inhabit other worlds and other lives. Having had a hand in inspiring a love of literature in others has been immensely satisfying.

I would like to add that this is not so much retirement as a return to being an artist full time.
