Now available this finely painted Japanese blue and white Arita shallow dish in the 'Kraak' style, dating to the Edo Period (circa 1680-1700).

The central roundel is decorated with a classic fuyo-de (芙蓉手) motif or jardiniere containing three sprays of flowering peony on a terrace with an insect above. The wide rim has eight large alternating panels containing either floral sprigs or sacred Buddhist objects, separated by narrow panels containing ornamental tassels. The reverse is painted with a scrolling band and expected four spur marks.

The decoration is typical of pieces exported by the Dutch East India Co. during the mid to late 17th Century. Civil War in China during the Ming-Qing transition (1640-1680) had severely affected Chinese kilns. As such, the Dutch turned to Japan to fulfill the European demand for blue and white fine porcelain in the same style.

A refined antique Japanese lacquer 'Natsume' tea caddy, dating to the 19th Century Edo Period, circa 1800-1850.

The diminutive Maki-e lacquer caddy, with rounded sides and flush fitting cover, is decorated in gold 'hiramaki-e' on a black lacquer ground, with the 'aoi' mon of three hollyhock leaves used by the Tokugawa clan. Such motifs were frequently used on tea utensils commissioned for or associated with the shogunate and high-ranking samurai families.

The decoration is achieved by layering lacquer onto a fine wooden core, the slightly raised decoration formed of red lacquer to which powdered gold is attached. The fine red lines seen to the 'aoi' leaves are further embellishment to the gold lacquer.

The box stands on a recessed foot, with the fine black lacquer continuing inside. It has been protected within its original brocade quilted silk pouch, complete with braided silk cords, a testament to its careful historical use and storage.

An antique Austrian silver mounted enamel trinket or patch box, originating from Vienna and dating to circa 1880.

The box is of heart shape, formed of enamel on copper, with hinged silver mount. The painted scenes illustrate the story of a lady (holding a horn) meeting a gentleman (holding a stringed instrument) in a romantic landscape to the sides, and the courtship (the Gentleman reads to the Lady under a tree) shown to the top of the lid. The decoration continues inside with floral sprays on a pink ground and a lady seated next to a lake with a castle in the background.

The silver mount has hand engraved zigzag and dot wrigglework decoration, and marked 'J.G' for the maker and 'A' for Vienna.

Now available this finely decorated antique Japanese Satsuma dragon vase of small proportions, dating to the late Edo to early Meiji Period, circa 1860-1870.

The surface decoration is of the finest quality, depicting a pair of dynamic dragons chasing a flaming pearl around the body, against the typical creamy crackle glaze ground. The dragon’s scales have been individually painted in green and yellow enamel, the whole highlighted in iron red and gold gilt.

The tapered neck and flared base, with low relief fluted molding and scalloped upper rim is decorated with wide borders of peonies and chrysanthemums amongst ‘karakusa’ foliate forms in overglaze gosu blue, all on a red and gold ground.

The base of the vase is unsigned which is not unusual for early Satsuma pieces. The signature only became important for overseas importers of fine work as a means to authenticate their purchased pieces. Prior to the expansion of Japanese export ware during the Meiji period, the quality of workmanship would be enough to identify a superior maker, as is the case here.

Background:

The production of Satsuma pottery dates back to the 16th century, and is still produced today in southern Japan around the Kagoshima region.

Painstakingly hand painted with beautifully detailed decoration in gilt and various polychrome enamels (moriage), the fine crackling (Kannyu) of the soft, creamy glaze is typical and was used more to give richness and depth to the colours. The enamel and gilding is applied on top of the glaze so that it stands proud of the surface.

The best Satsuma ceramic artists decorated their work freehand, often using a single rat’s hair to achieve the finest detail.

Carved of deeply patinated Linden wood, the holder is carved in the form of a dog wearing traditional Tyrolean dress, playing a 'Schweitzer Sackpfeifer' (bagpipes), and carrying an open sack on its back for holding matches, raised on a naturalistically carved oval base.

A charming and finely executed antique 19th Century Chinese overlay glass s***f bottle, from the Yangzhou school, dating to the Qing period, circa 1800-1850.

Of slender teardrop form, with waisted neck, narrow opening and flat lip, to an oval foot ring of applied brown glass. Made of translucent white glass with a rich brown overlay, this bottle is carved in the round with an engaging scene featuring a cat with raised tail intently watching a mouse, alongside auspicious scholarly objects including a vase with flowering branch, piled fruits on a stand, and other symbolic treasures. The reverse side continues the theme. Both sides are flanked by elegant lingzhi form ring handles.

It is fitted with a carved green hardstone (jade) stopper with black collar which rests on top. No spoon is present.

A wonderful collection of four original watercolour paintings on paper by the renowned Newlyn school Cornish artist Frederick James McNamara Evans (1859-1929), depicting Cornish fishermen, his most celebrated subject.

Each of the four men were clearly known to the artist enabling him to capture their kind and wizened faces. They each wear a traditional fisherman's hat, either white or blue cloth working tunics, one with a red scarf at his neck. They are all similarly framed under glass with a green mount and simple oak frames, suiting the paintings extremely well.

Three of the paintings are signed 'F.M.Evans' to the lower right corner. Whilst the fourth is unsigned it is clearly by the same hand.

Details to the back of one of the frames indicate that this collection was previously consigned and purchased through Christie's Auction in London.

Background:

Fred McNamara Evans (1859–1929) was born in London on 7th September 1859. He studied art at the Royal Institute School in London, later joining the growing colony of artists in Newlyn, Cornwall in the late 1880s, working mostly in watercolour.

He is best known for painting small head and shoulder portraits of local fisherman and women, capturing the character of his sitters in detailed watercolour studies. He began exhibiting in 1886 and showed several works at the Royal Academy during the 1890s.

He died in Penzance in 1929.

An antique Art Nouveau sterling silver jewellery box, made by William Comyns & Sons, and dating to circa 1904.

The oval box is decorated with embossed lilies to the lid, and stands on four ball and claw feet. The hinged lid opens to reveal gilding to the interior lid, and a blue velvet lining to the inside.

The side is hallmarked as follows:

Date letter: (i) for 1904

Assay office: London

Maker's mark: W.C for William Comyns & Sons (worn but decipherable).

Silver grade: Lion passant mark for 925/1000 silver

The registration number 426309 is also embossed is tiny numbers alongside one of the lower leaves to the lid.
