Inspired by Standen, curated by Sussex Contemporary is in its final month. So, if you haven’t made it yet – can I highly recommend this incredible house and exhibition.
My 3 illuminated boxes were chosen because they tell an oak tree narrative rooted in the Arts and Crafts aesthetic. The final piece, shown here, is called The Observers, as the birds’ nest and rest at the top of the tree.
Originally conceived as eight hand-cut linocuts, each print was scanned, enlarged and digitally collaged to define distinct foreground and background layers. Those layers became individual colour separations, hand screen-printed onto glass with specialist mediums and glass enamels. Each fired panel is then housed in a bespoke, hand-painted wooden light box.
This work can be found in the Billard Room, placed in situ, as if the original owners of this amazing Arts & Crafts house were still choosing pieces for their home today.
The exhibition runs Standen House & Garden from Thurs 2 July to Wed 30 Sept.
