Local Bike Shop Week Awards – voting is now open

We’ve been blown away by the response to the first-ever Local Bike Shop Week Awards, with independent bike shops from across the UK sharing inspiring examples of expertise, community impact and passion for cycling.

Following judging, 8 outstanding shops have been shortlisted. https://bit.ly/LBSW-Awards-Finalists

When you get the lastest mag and it distracts you from fixing bikes, making you believe you can send it and spend hours trying to rear tyre jam bar throw 😂🙏🔧

Shout out to keeping bmx, print and action photography alive in this boring digital era. There’s something so cool about physical print. This truly is the biggest bmx magazine ever made 🤌🤯🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Mechanic sounds and sights, the absolute fear sets in when you need the drill on a bike. Even after tooling for all these years, it just requires patience and procedure.

This is a helicoil which is a small steel coil which is used repair the damaged thread. First we drill out the hole, tap new threads in the hole, screw the helicoil in and torque test for safety.

Now it’s repaired I can properly bleed the brakes and get new pads in 🔧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Mechanic sounds and sights, this week we’re not forking around! I come across this issue fairly regularly where the suspension is almost acting in reverse, this happens when the pressure gets transferred into the negative chamber. A quick lower leg removal and rebuild and the issue is sorted, if it persists we’ll look at a full fork service.

As for last weeks Shimano battery issue I’m awaiting the specialist tool to repair the bike so keen an eye of for part two!

I’m fully booked for the coming weeks so get booked in for spring servicing w/c 16th February, link in bio.

Mechanic sights and sounds, this week I wanted to show some behind the scenes hassle us mechanics need to deal with. As you can see diagnostics can take a long time that’s often unbillable to the customer, but often customers want quick and fast solutions. In this case I’ve followed diagnostics procedures, fault finding steps and literally tested the system outside of the bike. I’m going to phone up my expert tech help at Shimano to understand what we can do for the customer shy of replacing components with no obvious faults.

Any thoughts from fellow techs? Customers? Shimano?

Mechanic sounds and sights, fakie hop 180 then a dropper cable change. It’s not meant to be clean it’s meant to be challenging in restrictive environments like a workshop. For droppers I’d recommend getting a bike floor stand and working on it by a table.

Bookings available w/c 2nd February. Link in bio 🔧

What trick should I land next? What repairs do you want to see? Drop in the comments? 👀
