I have always loved the samplers worked during the eighteenth century . This example of a tablet sampler has a particular strength which is very appealing. A sampler almost certainly worked under the same instruction by Ann Bay in 1722 is in the collection of the V&A Museum, London . This example worked by Mary best worked in her eleventh year bears the date 17289 , reflecting the calendar used in the early 18th century in England .The sampler retains excellent original condition and colour.

Here is a smaller sampler dating from 1772 but almost certainly worked under the same instruction as the last sampler I posted . These two samplers are from a small but fascinating group of Scottish samplers , all of which date to the second half of the 18th century .

A wonderful Scottish sampler , worked by Margaret Davie in fabulous original condition with good colour.

I still find it amazing that this sampler found its way back to Witney via Florida . This sampler appeared on the front cover of our very first sampler catalogue and of course being worked in Corn Street where our shop is it could never be sold . It was purchased in Florida by an English dealer who knew my mother and knew she would want it , I would love to hear the story of how it got to America ! The house where Catherine lived and where she attended school are still standing in Witney .
