We were thrilled to be interviewed by Ollie Saunders from the Chiswick Flower Market, alongside other British flower farmers, about what it’s actually like growing flowers in a changing climate.

This is our fourth year of flower farming, and every single year has brought a new weather extreme. From incredibly wet seasons, to record-breaking heat, drought and now increasingly unpredictable swings between the two.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have been given permission to expand our growing area last winter. Having more space has meant we’ve been able to plant larger quantities of the varieties we know cope well here, giving us a little more resilience.

We’ve been having lots of conversations with other flower farmers about what we’ve lost this year, what has done well and what we’re changing for next season. There’s a huge amount of shared learning happening amongst British growers right now. You can read the full article via the link in our bio.

And finally, it’s Chiswick Flower Market 6th birthday today! 🥳 We’re really sad we can’t be there to celebrate, but if you’re nearby, do pop over, grab some cake and show some love to the wonderful growers trading. Six years of championing British flowers is something very special - thank you CFM team.

We’ve been keeping a little secret 🤫

Our seed packets, beautifully designed with , are now stocked in RHS Garden Wisley and RHS Garden Bridgewater shops with and we could.not.be prouder.

Walking into the shop and seeing our products sitting on the shelves was very surreal 🥹

So much love goes into our seeds, from the beautiful artwork Jasmyn creates for each packet, to hand harvesting, cleaning and packing every seed ourselves.

We’re so thrilled that even more people will now be able to grow flowers from locally grown seed, filling gardens, allotments and community spaces with more flowers.

A very big milestone for our flower farm 🫶🏻 if you see our seeds in the shops please do tag us!

A MEGA day of cutting. It’s only Wednesday and we’ve already cut over 3,000 stems this week. It genuinely surprises me how many flowers we can grow in a reasonably small area. Thanks for keeping us so busy 🙏

Florists - it’s tassel season (!!), plenty of v tall and large Amaranthus for installs available 👀

Week 32 😵‍💫

This week ended rather unexpectedly with me in resus at Chelsea & Westminster after my heart rate hit 160 and my temperature reached 39.5°C.

After the fifth heatwave of the year, I’d put my exhaustion down to the usual August burnout + heat. I finally stopped being stubborn after about 3 hours of shivering in the van while Russell ran our market stall solo. NHS 111 told me to call 999 and I was blue-lighted to hospital and taken straight into resus. It all felt slightly surreal 🙃

Long story short, the doctor said it was early-stage sepsis from a viral infection, made worse by heat illness and dehydration.

We try not to work during the hottest hours, but farming doesn’t pause for weather. Plants still need watering, harvesting and picking, and this year the window where it’s actually comfortable (or safe) to work outside has been tiny.

Flower farming also makes switching off surprisingly difficult. At its heart, it’s a service business. We grow flowers to give someone else joy, beauty and a memorable experience. We care a LOT. I always have a plan A, B and C, and even in resus I was wondering if I’d be well enough to do our market the next day. AM I MAD?! 😂

Ironically, our flowers have probably never looked better. We mostly grow things that naturally like our sandy, nutrient-poor soil, and many have absolutely loved the heat and dry conditions. The flowers are looooving life, even if the people growing them aren’t quite as enthusiastic about the weather.

Anyway, I’m taking this as a fairly strong reminder that I’m not, in fact, invincible 🫣 I’m going to put a proper heatwave policy in place for the business, so hopefully we can avoid a repeat of this.

Now I’m very much looking forward to some cooler weather and PLEASE a bit of rain!

*I’m very aware flowers are at the bottom of the list when it comes to what’s essential in farming, but it’s what I do, so it’s the part of this conversation I can speak from.

To give you an idea of how busy we’ve been lately, doing a double market weekend actually feels like a bit of a break 🤣

We’re at South Kensington Farmers’ Market tomorrow, followed by Marylebone Farmers’ Market on Sunday.

We’ll be bringing LOTS of flowers with us 🙌🌸

Come and say hi!
