A NAME IN PIANO HISTORY 🎹

When Franz Liszt toured Europe defining modern piano virtuosity, he played an Érard. When Chopin performed in Paris, Érard was at the centre of the city’s musical renaissance.

Founded by Sébastien Érard, the firm didn’t just build pianos, they transformed how the instrument functioned. Érard’s invention of the double-escapement action allowed notes to repeat rapidly before the key fully released, unlocking a level of expression and speed that composers had only dreamed of.

This late 19th century Érard grand piano represents a tangible piece of that legacy. Preserved in the same family for over 50 years, it captures the warm, distinct acoustic voice of romantic era European piano crafting.

British pianist Christopher Seed commissioned Dutch fortepiano makers Poletti & Tuinman to build a completely mirror image piano for him.

The result? A piano where the highest notes are on the left and the lowest are on the right. The lid and pedals were reversed too.

Seed, who is left-handed, felt that having the melody and more elaborate musical lines under his dominant left hand gave him a physical and instinctive advantage.
The instrument was completed in 1998, and Seed gave its launch concert at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1999.

WHAT A NIGHT. 🎹

Martha Argerich returned to the BBC Proms last night, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Munich Philharmonic and Lahav Shani at the Royal Albert Hall.

A remarkable performance, a packed hall and a huge ovation, followed by a four hands encore of Ravel’s Le Jardin féerique with Shani.

One to remember.

Martha Argerich is coming to Birmingham.

On 4 September 2026, Martha Argerich returns to Symphony Hall for the first time in over 30 years.

She will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Lahav Shani.

The Birmingham concert is the orchestra’s only UK performance outside London.
