During his routine morning trot along the shoreline, Smokey, the white Welsh Mountain Pony, spots something unusual—the lighthouse beacon is flashing in broad daylight. Intrigued, he investigates further and learns that Silver the Seaman is worried about the dwindling fish numbers impacting the local sea life. With assistance from Ollie the Octopus, they uncover the culprit, and Smokey formulates a clever strategy to restore balance to the ocean.

Balou and Portia delivered paw-written notes through each of their neighbours doors, telling them of Smokey's plans. Everyone was anxious to know what his idea was, as well as finding out how they could help.

How can we all help coral reefs recover?

Coral reefs are vital—we rely on them for food, coastal protection, and biodiversity (about a quarter of marine species depend on reefs). We can help them recover by taking practical, everyday actions:

- Cut carbon emissions: lower energy use, fly less, and support clean-energy policies—climate change is the biggest threat to reefs, and reducing greenhouse gases slows warming and bleaching.

- Prevent pollution and runoff: use less fertiliser, fix septic systems, pick up litter, and reduce single-use plastics so waters stay clear and nutrient-balanced.

- Choose reef-safe products: use sunscreens labelled 'reef-safe' (look for non-nano zinc oxide) and avoid harmful chemicals like oxybenzone.

- Support protection and restoration: donate to or volunteer with local reef-monitoring and restoration groups, and back marine protected areas that allow reefs to recover.
- Be a responsible traveller and consumer: don’t touch or stand on corals, anchor on sand, and buy sustainably caught seafood.

- Advocate and educate: share reliable info, vote for ocean-friendly policies, and encourage businesses to reduce coastal impacts.
