🐝 Day 18 of 30 Days Wild – Learning About Nature

You can’t always believe your eyes…

Many hoverflies have evolved to look like bees or wasps, even though they are completely harmless. Some are black and white, some brown and cream, and they come in all sorts of surprising shapes and more colours.

These fascinating mimics are excellent pollinators and an important part of healthy ecosystems.

Want to learn more about hoverflies and why they deserve more love? ❤️

Jase is obviously my favourite 🦊❤️, but I really enjoyed meeting the donkeys and goats too! Nature isn’t just wild animals. Domestic animals have plenty to teach us as well – and spending time with them is good for the soul 🐴🐐🥰🌿

🌸 Day 17 of 30 Days Wild

Have you ever wondered why cranesbill geraniums are called cranesbills?

After flowering, the seed heads develop a long, pointed shape that resembles the beak of a crane, giving these beautiful plants their name. 🩷

Some cranesbills are native to the UK, while others have been specially bred for gardens, but many are loved by pollinators for their nectar-rich flowers.

As the seeds develop, they can provide food for wildlife too, including small mammals such as wood mice.

Beautiful, useful and full of life, these cheerful flowers prove that even familiar garden plants can tell fascinating stories. ❤️

Day 16 of 30 Days Wild:

Sometimes my life feels like a mockumentary written by David Attenborough & The Muppets!

Fox chaos
Hedgehog chaos
Getting told off by great t**s & blackbirds when 🦊 is the one being disruptive
Getting more soggy bottoms in a week than Paul Hollywood gets on Bake Off, again whilst 🦊 sits somewhere dry

Now the wood pigeons appear to have retaliated for the broadcasting of their intimate moments last week…

They have defied the laws of physics & managed to 💩 on the inside of my window - it was barely open 🤯🤦‍♀️😂

Day 16 of 30 Days Wild: Learning About Nature

🦊 Why are foxes so misunderstood?

Foxes often seem unable to win.

They’re sometimes labelled as pests or vermin, yet they play an important role in keeping rodent and rabbit populations under control.

They are intelligent, adaptable and fascinating animals, but sharing space with wildlife isn’t always simple. Poultry keepers and farmers face very real challenges, and balancing the needs of people and wildlife can be complicated.

Perhaps understanding each other a little better is a good place to start. ❤️

If you’d like to read more about what it’s like sharing a wildlife garden with a fox, I’ve written about it here:

Day 15 of 30 Days Wild - Learning About Nature

Hornets are remarkable creatures - intelligent, adaptable, and far less interested in bothering us than most people imagine. They conserve energy, assess their options, and often choose the most efficient route.

As a neurodivergent person, I can appreciate that. Why spend precious resources building from scratch when an existing solution works perfectly well?

Nature is full of different ways of thinking, solving problems, and thriving. Sometimes, the traits we misunderstand most are the very ones that make survival possible. 🐝

🌙 Day 14 of 30 Days Wild – Using Your Senses

There are lots of sounds to listen out for after dark.

I recorded a barn owl, a possible deer bark and some very busy hedgehogs rustling and bulldozing their way around… but you could mostly hear the traffic. 🤦‍♀️😂

I think I accidentally deleted a little owl recording from a while back, so instead here’s Jase barking one January night. ❤️🦊

Night-time nature isn’t always silent.

Do you find these sounds spooky or soothing?

🕊️ Day 13 of 30 Days Wild – Using Your Senses

The pigeons are enjoying 30 Days Wild a little too much 😂🐦 -maybe it’s because it’s National Pigeon Day too!

If you’ve heard a lot of wing clapping and enthusiastic cooing recently, chances are you’ve discovered some rather amorous wood pigeons. 😂❤️

Courtship and mating are all part of nature too, but if romance isn’t your thing, take a closer look at the beautiful textures around them instead. The soft feathers of the pigeons contrast perfectly with the ivy and the bark of the elder tree.

Nature can be noisy, messy and sometimes surprisingly romantic. ❤️
