The Importance of Correct Modelling and Images!

This image was used in an educational publication by a National Education Organisation. Whoever had authorised it's inclusion obviously had no understanding of what is wrong with it and its potential for reputational damage to their organisation! After I pointed out the issues, it was changed within hours!

This is so wrong from a number of points;
1) the left-handed child shouldn't be seated to the right or a right handed child (knocking elbows).
2) the pencil grip is really poor.
3) the writing hand/arm covers over the writing with possibility of smudging, not being able to see where one words end before moving on to the next.
4) can't see what they have written.

So, whether you're a writer of an article, editor of an educational publication, DfE policy advisor, OFSTED Inspector, Head Teacher, Teacher or Teaching Assistant, you need to be aware of how a "good" handwriting technique looks from a left-handed perspective. And please DON'T assume that using a mirror image of a right hander will suffice; it won't!!

Yes! It's "Left-Handers Day, Part 2" this Thursday, the 27th August ! We are celebrating with the Worcester Festival, as "Left-Handers Day, Part 1" didn't fit within this year's Worcester Festival time line.
It may be hot outside, but it'll be cool (in more ways than one! ha-ha😀)to be joining us in the Crowngate Shopping Centre!

INTERNATIONAL LEFT-HANDERS DAY, Thursday 13th August
Handwriting is making a come-back!!

Left n Write Director, Mark Stewart, states:
“As Author of the left-handed section of The Writing Framework, published by the DfE in July 2025, I was pleased to see that this publication will give teachers greater awareness and understanding of the Handwriting issues lefthanders may face and will hopefully give left-handed children a way forward to help them achieve their full academic potential!”
Mark is also a Founder member of LEFT -IN which was formed in 2021 aiming to improve the information and education available to the educators of left-handed children around the world. There are now 20 members in 15 different countries!
This year LEFT-IN have held a panel discussion on the topic from Early Education through to High School, titled: “Minor Differences, Major Impact”. The panel consisted of people from around the world (including Mark), from diverse backgrounds, and all with an interest in educating our left-handed children correctly and effortlessly. We gathered a panel of seven experts to discuss current issues in the education of left-handed children, from Early education through to high school.

Handedness in Today’s Classroom
The Computer or the Pen
Designing Schools for Everyone
Personal Experiences
Teacher Training and Inclusivity
The World Beyond the Classroom
