I finished twelve birthstone paintings, then found myself sketching one that belonged to no month at all.

For weeks, I’ve been working within January to December. Each painting had its own stone, flower and meaning.

But somewhere early in the process, something changed.

I stopped trying to keep all the colour neatly inside the heart. I let the light and paint drift into the background, as though the painting needed a little more room to breathe.

That was the moment the collection began to feel right.

When I finally placed all twelve together, they had the lightness I had been hoping for. Each one felt different, but they belonged beside one another.

I want opening one to feel like opening a small keepsake. A moment that belongs to you, connected to a person, a memory or simply something beautiful you want to hold onto.

And then, almost without thinking, I drew a larger heart filled with a sunflower.

Perhaps after spending so long working within the months, part of me was ready to step outside them.

Wanted one to be mine.

I’m not painting it yet.

For now, the twelve are finished. They are waiting for their own moment in the light.
