A few photographs from a recent tuning visit to the Lewis & Co. organ at St James the Great, Cranham.

Originally built by Lewis & Co. of Brixton in 1894 as Job no. 534, the organ replaced an earlier J.W. Walker instrument. The handsome oak case was designed by the Gloucestershire architect Sidney Gambier Parry as part of the Victorian restoration of the church.

Although modest in size, the organ possesses a particularly charming specification and retains much of the character and craftsmanship for which Lewis instruments are rightly admired.

In 2024, we completed a comprehensive restoration of the organ. The organ was entirely dismantled, restored and reassembled, with work including the action, winding system, console and pipework, together with cleaning, repairs, regulation and tonal finishing throughout.

It was a pleasure to return recently for the organ’s annual tuning. More than 130 years after it was built, this fine Lewis instrument continues to lead worship and support the musical life of the parish, and we look forward to caring for it for many years to come.

As part of the recent restoration of the 1874 J.W. Walker organ at All Saints’ Church, Down Ampney, a new oak music desk and mirror have been added to the console.

The original music desk has been retained in situ and remains completely unaltered. The additional desk was designed as a reversible addition, providing a more practical reading height for modern music whilst respecting the character of the historic instrument.

Both the music desk and mirror were handcrafted by Kevin Davies, whose craftsmanship and attention to detail have ensured that these new additions sit naturally within the existing console.

A small enhancement, perhaps, but one that will make a significant difference to those using the instrument for many years to come.

A very enjoyable afternoon yesterday at All Saints’ Church, Down Ampney, for the inaugural recital of the restored 1874 J.W. Walker organ.
Before the recital, the instrument was dedicated and blessed by Canon Graham Morris, after which Jonathan Hope gave an excellent programme that demonstrated the organ’s musical character.
It was particularly pleasing to share the occasion with Ray Cook and members of the church community who have supported the project throughout. I would also like to thank Kevin Davies, Keith Jones and Alfie Daly, whose skill, dedication and hard work contributed greatly to the restoration.

It is always rewarding to hear a historic instrument returned to regular use, and we hope this fine organ will continue to support the worship and musical life of the church for many years to come.

Delighted to share that Daly Organs Ltd has been appointed to carry out the restoration of the historic organ at St Mary the Virgin Church, Hanbury.

Following recent BBC coverage highlighting the importance of securing the organ’s future, work is due to commence in September 2026, alongside separate specialist conservation of the casework and painted pipes.

We are grateful to the PCC and all supporting this important project, and look forward to sharing progress as the restoration develops.

Following on from our post in January, here’s a look at the completion of the restoration at All Saints, Down Ampney.

After extensive workshop work, the organ has now been fully reinstalled, with all components carefully restored, regulated and brought back into proper working order. Reassembly on site is always one of the most rewarding stages of any project.

The final stages included tonal finishing and tuning, ensuring the instrument speaks evenly and reliably throughout.

It’s been a real privilege to bring this instrument back into full working condition, preserving its character while securing its future for many years to come.

A great team effort throughout - my special thanks to Kevin, Keith, Alfie and Neil for their valued contribution to the project.
