The Christmas Changeover: What It Can Mean for Your Dog

The holidays often bring a very different rhythm of life; more people at home, later nights, disrupted walks, extra food, visitors, and less structure.

Then, almost overnight, it all changes again.

🏢 Adults return to work.
🏫 Children go back to school.
🤫 Homes become quieter.
🫡 Routines tighten up.

For many dogs, this second shift can be just as challenging as Christmas itself.

It can be similar to weekends;
Many guardians notice that their dog behaves differently at weekends—more unsettled, more reactive, more “busy,” or more clingy.

That’s because weekends already disrupt the predictable weekday pattern:
• Different wake-up times
• More people moving around the house
• Less alone time
• More stimulation and emotional energy

Christmas is essentially weeks of weekends in a row.

Dogs adapt to that new normal—then suddenly it’s removed. What follows is often confusion, frustration, or dysregulation, not “bad behaviour.”

What you might notice
🫂 Increased clinginess or difficulty settling when left
📣 More vocalising, pacing, or restlessness
❌ Reduced appetite or digestive upset
👀 Heightened reactivity on walks
⏮️ Regression in behaviours you thought were “sorted”

Dogs thrive on predictability. When their expectations shift—first to constant company, then back to quiet independence—the nervous system has to recalibrate again.

Think of it as emotional jet lag.

How to help your dog through the changeover
• Re-establish calm, predictable daily rhythms as soon as possible
• Build in intentional decompression time (sniffing, chewing, free exploration)
• Lower expectations temporarily—this is not the time to “push training”
• Support regulation before independence (calm first, then alone time)
• Keep departures and arrivals low-key

This transition is about safety and stability.

With support, most dogs settle again once their nervous system understands the new pattern.

So you may find over the next week when “life” goes back to norma, your dogs struggle a little. Be patient with them 💜 they will settle 😌
