This October in York, something is coming through the closet door.

Join us at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall for a spectacular evening of camp horror, q***r culture and graphic storytelling.

ABOUT QUEENS OF THE CRYPT

When seventeen-year-old Barnaby Jones comes out to their parents as nonbinary over breakfast, they expect that to be the toughest part of their day.

But that was before Barnaby discovers their best friend, Fi, has been kidnapped by a faceless killer who's been abducting teens all across the small town of Widow's Creek.

Barnaby then unwittingly summons the undead and fabulous Queens of the Crypt through a portal in their bedroom closet, meeting the Phantom, the Countess, Lady Invisible, the Creature, and the Bogeywoman.

Independent bookshops are the heart of our high streets, but rising business rates are making it increasingly tough for them to survive.

Indies not eligible for full Small Business Rates Relief face an average rate hike of £4,563 by 2029/30, meaning they need to sell an extra 1,141 books every year just to cover the difference.

As a result, 85% of independent booksellers say these increases will force them to scale back investments in stock, staffing, community events and physical stores.

We’re proud to support the in calling on the Government to offer targeted business rates relief for bookshops, similar to the relief given to pubs, to protect high street culture as a lasting legacy of the National Year of Reading.

The Booksellers Association’s letter to the Prime Minister and Chancellor was backed by 233 bookshops alongside authors including Philip Pullman, Katherine Rundell, Adam Kay, Donna Ashworth, Jamie Smart, Patrick Ness, Rachel Joyce, Anthony Horowitz, Robin Ince, Maggie O’Farrell, Elle McNicoll, Patrice Lawrence, Florence Knapp and Lemn Sissay.

: Will you support your local bookshops and protect our high street culture?

Criminally Good Books welcomed bestselling crime author David Fennell to the shop on Tuesday evening to celebrate his brand new novel, ALL KILLERS ABOARD.

David's novel features: a luxury liner from Southampton to New York, a convention of serial killers, one shocking murder on deck, one mysterious red button and two very reluctant detectives and is dark, dazzling, deliciously twisty and, as everyone in the room discovered, relentlessly funny.

David was interviewed by fellow crime writer Chris McDonald, whose own Manchester-set PI novel THE WRONG MAN introduced us all to Ethan Adler earlier this summer.

The two brilliant crime authors shared a fascinating conversation and a Q&A that proved this audience knows its way around a murder plot.

Thank you to everyone who came out on a Tuesday evening and thank you to David and Chris for being such generous, talented, funny and warm company.

Books were signed, suspects were discussed, nobody was thrown overboard, so, all in all, a good night's work. 🥂

📚 Signed copies of ALL KILLERS ABOARD and THE WRONG MAN are available in-store while stocks last, so pop into the store to pick up your copies or DM to order online and we’ll post straight to your door!
