This week's arrivals lead with something genuinely special for E657 collectors.

The 10-1874 E657 Series in E653 Revival Colour Orange is a ten-car Special Project set that brings back one of the regional liveries the E653 wore in its years on JR East's Joban Line, reapplied to the current E657 body. It sits alongside the Revival Colour Blue release from earlier in the year, and between the two you can now build out the E657's tribute to its predecessor's colour range. One available at £355.60.

Also in this week: the 10-2167 N700-6000 Series Shinkansen "Kodama" eight-car set, JR West's all-stops Sanyo Shinkansen formation running between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. £266.40, two available.

And a pairing that tells its own engineering story: the 10-2241 Kiha 201 Series "Niseko Liner" and the 10-2240 731 Series "Ishikari Liner", both from JR Hokkaido. The two types were built to run coupled together, diesel and electric power under shared control, a distinctive piece of Hokkaido railway engineering. £140.40 and £142.20, two available each.

Getting started with KATO N gauge: the questions we're asked most often? Ian gets asked a version of these questions most weeks, so here's the shorthand version.

What should I buy first? Start with a KATO starter set. It bundles a loco, a handful of cars, and enough Unitrack to build a simple oval, which means you're running trains on day one rather than assembling a shopping list from scratch.

What should I avoid? Don't mix track systems. KATO Unitrack has its own connector profile, so building a layout around it and then trying to bolt on another manufacturer's track tends to cause more frustration than it saves.

What does 'formation' mean? It's the term for a complete, correctly ordered set of cars that make up a prototype train, rather than just a loco and a couple of wagons. KATO sells many trains as formations for exactly this reason, buy the set, and you have the full consist as it ran.

Do I need DCC straight away? No. Plenty of enthusiasts run analogue for years before adding DCC, and it's a straightforward upgrade path when you're ready for independent control or sound.

If you're just getting started, or thinking about it, come and have a chat. We'd rather talk you through it than have you guess! 🚂

Event alert!

We are heading to the International N Gauge Show on 12 and 13 September at the Warwickshire Event Centre, Stand 27/28.

If there is something specific you are hoping to see on the stand, message us now and we will make sure we bring it with us. Whether it is a particular KATO locomotive, a piece of Unitrack, or something from our Japanese, North American, European, or UK outline range, let us know and we will do our best. We will be there with The Model Tree Shop too, so come along and check out how they can help your layout.

You can also order online now at traintrax.co.uk for collection at the show 🚂

Ian's been putting these Greenbrier tank cars through their paces, and the DCC sound is what makes them worth talking about. It's not just a rumble in the background. Switch it on and you get the low industrial hum, airbrake release, and coupling clunk that bring a freight consist to life on the layout, not just in the display case.

If your layout runs DCC, these are worth a look. Fully detailed KATO tooling, tank car proportions that hold up under close inspection, and sound that turns a static model into something that feels alive on the layout.
