🧀 THE BIG CHEESE 🐭

I’m used to working on some pretty big projects, so this one was a bit of a test for me!

Meet The Big Cheese — a cheeky little mouse tucked inside a piece of steel cheese. Getting all that character and detail into such a small sculpture was a proper challenge, but we had a lot of fun with this one.

Built from steel and brought to life using the ESAB Rustler and Cutmaster 30+. Being able to quickly adjust the digital settings on both machines makes jumping between different materials, thicknesses and techniques so much easier.

Now the big question… who needs a cheeky little mouse keeping an eye on their cheese? 👀🧀

I was great to deliver these guys in person and help set them up at their new home.

Handmade here at Burned by Design in Kirkbymoorside, fabricated in steel then hot-dip galvanised and T-washed, giving the metal that beautifully aged, weathered finish that will continue to develop over time.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about bringing a pile of steel and empty gas cylinders to life.

After hours of cutting, bending, welding and shaping, this pair of boxing hares is finally complete. Standing at 4ft 5in tall, each hare is balanced on a single leg, with one landing a perfectly timed kick as they battle it out mid-air. Getting the sculpture to feel full of movement while remaining structurally sound was one of the biggest challenges of the build.

The next stop is hot-dip galvanising, where they’ll receive a lifetime of protection before heading off to their new home.

A huge shout out to ESAB. Every weld on this sculpture was made using the ESAB Rustler, and it has been faultless from start to finish. Smooth, reliable and built for long days in the workshop—it’s become an essential part of my fabrication process.

Bite my shiny metal…

One of those projects that you simply can’t say no to…

We recently had the opportunity to collaborate with the team at Hulu to design and build a custom steel sculpture celebrating the launch of Futurama Season 14.

Taking an iconic series and transforming it into a handcrafted piece of metal art was an incredible challenge. From the initial concept and design work through to precision laser cutting, fabrication and finishing, every stage was completed here in our Yorkshire workshop.

It’s always a privilege when global brands trust us to bring their ideas to life, and we’re proud to have played a small part in celebrating the return of one of the greatest animated sci-fi series ever made.

🥊🐇 Day 5 on the giant boxing hares!

Yesterday I finished fabricating the first hare, shaping and welding 3mm sheet steel onto the framework to really bring the character to life. Today it’s all about the second hare, bending, shaping and welding the internal framework before the skin starts to go on.

Projects like this involve hours of cutting, grinding and welding, so having the right PPE is just as important as the tools. I’ve been wearing the ESAB Sentinel A70 Pro all day, and it’s been brilliant. The flip-up welding screen combined with the oversized grinding visor means I can switch between welding and grinding in seconds without constantly changing helmets. Comfortable, practical and built for long days in the workshop.

It’s starting to feel like these two are about to square up… and I can’t wait to show you the finished sculpture! 👊🔥
