๐ One of nature's most intriguing flowers... Passiflora ๐ฟ
With its intricate, almost otherworldly blooms, it's easy to see why Passiflora (Passion Flower) is one of the most fascinating climbers. Every flower is a masterpiece, with striking petals, delicate filaments and a unique floral structure unlike almost anything else.
Its history is just as captivating. The name Passiflora, meaning "Passion Flower", was given by 16th-century Spanish missionaries in South America, who believed the flower's distinctive parts symbolised the Passion of Christ. The five anthers represented the five wounds, the three stigmas the nails of the crucifixion, and the crown-like filaments the crown of thorns.
Today, Passiflora is a popular choice for commercial and residential landscape schemes, bringing vertical interest, vibrant summer colour and a distinctive architectural element to walls, fences, pergolas and green infrastructure. Its nectar-rich flowers are also a valuable source of food for bees and other pollinators. ๐
