Dearest friend….
If you’ve passed us at 42 Gillygate recently you may have noticed the Victorian desk in the window and wondered at the aesthetic change from snowhome’s traditions.

Well, welcome to our moment of at-home calm; perhaps even quiet contemplation. Come in - join us.

You find us sat writing a letter to a dear friend, or maybe our journal. Yes a moment about those thoughts and the feel and feedback of pen on paper, but one too about everything we can see, feel, smell, hear and maybe even taste during this tiny, our-time, respite of simply being.

That moment is what we are about - which is why the desk is distinctly not working-from-home ready.

As our eye draws back from the nib and line of wet ink we catch a glimpse of, what? A pencil case, the catchall tray with the cheery paper clips where we’ve placed a ring and watch while we write; a glass and a cheeky square or three of chocolate winking at us? Further, a vase of flowers, a plant, the card from mum, the shadow from a light shade? And then… a waft of scent - cologne? candle? balm? The feel of new socks and slippers on our feet; the smooth from today’s shave…?

Our imagined moment encompasses a huge variety of sensations and, of course, permits a wide variety of things. All are, we hope, mellow and slow: micro oases of calm for everyday.

Home. Life.

How lovely is this image from Grace showing the seven designs she created for our new Post-a-Print cards. Created in collaboration with they each capture one of seven seasonal preserving recipes created by brilliant Joe and Jim at Food Circle. Grace perfectly bought to life our brief to present these as joyful, display worthy prints that captured the recipe in the design and offered a postcard reverse so the card could be written and posted to share some snail mail connections. They are a celebration of good food and good connections for this year’s ‘What a Pickle’ theme. You can collect a free ‘candied squash’ card from us until 28th October where you can also buy the full packs of six. Or, why not head down to the producer’s market this Saturday 12-1.30 pm or next Wednesday 5-6.30 pm . You will find a warm welcome, a whole range of fabulous seasonal produce from regenerative meat from and to beautiful fruit and veg from a host of hard working local growers, bread, cakes and delicious meals from to name just a few. They are a brilliant team trying to create a new food system from the soil up and they were one of our lockdown saviours, their weekly, fresh and delicious food bring a bit of joy and inspiration when we needed it most.

Thank you so much to everyone who is still backing the Word Map. We have 15 hours left to go and whilst we have reached our funding goal (hurrah) you can still back the maps. Some of the options like the plum colour may not be in store after the campaign (we just need to see what works best) and the final two unique screen prints are also still available, an opportunity to have a copy of the map with your own unique entry on. So, if there is a particular reward you fancied grab it whilst you can. Any additional pennies raised all go into the project and we are thinking of other product options like a tote bag for the design. What do you think?

Hello again lovely people. We have just been doing a happy dance round the kitchen but now we have stopped (well for a mo’) we thought we ought to say the campaign is live for another 27 hours and the rewards are still available so don’t despair, if you wanted to back a map, you still can. We even still have two of the limited edition unique screen prints left (apologies I couldn’t count this morning) and lots of other goodies. Any additional funds still go into the project and if we do raise more we are thinking tote bags 🤔. What do you think? Anyway, have a great evening and thank you again for all the awesome support. We can’t wait to share the map’s progress with you.

It is the last full day of the Kickstarter campaign, there are just 40 hours to go and we now only need to raise £217 to make the maps a reality. We still have lots of lovely reward options on offer from classic blue/black to the last two unique screen prints, the deep plum edition and the limited edition metallic silver. To make the maps we need to raise the full £3,000 funding goal, as an all or nothing funding platform, Kickstarter doesn’t release any of the funds unless we reach our target. If we don’t they don’t mark the project as a success, non of the existing backers are charged and no funding is paid to the project. So, we really need your help. If you can share this post or let a map or York loving friend know about the campaign we would be so grateful. We really hope the maps will end up on sale in the shop but to guarantee that we just need one final little push to the finish line. Thank you so much to everyone for all your help and support so far, you have been amazing.

Art in action. Our limited edition screen prints (one of the Word Map of York Kickstarter rewards) will all be hand screen printed by Alison in her studio near York. There are just 2 of these prints left, part of a super limited edition run of 10, each offering the chance to have one new entry added to the map which is unique to you. A person, date, couple’s initials or anything York linked that is special to you. It will create a piece of art totally unique to you, each one signed and numbered by Alison and ready for Christmas gifting. Check out the link in our bio to view the reward and others on offer for the remaining 58 hours of the campaign.

Thank you so much for all your support over the weekend. We are just £304 off our Kickstarter funding goal now, how amazing are you. The offer deals may have ended but we still have the Word Map of York available in the two new colours (deep plum and blue) as well as the classic blue/black and the limited edition silver-grey metallic. There are now just two of the unique screen prints available though so if you would like one of those we would advise grabbing one whilst you can. We have 62 hours left on the campaign to get to our full £3,000 goal so we can make the maps a reality. Thank you so much for getting us this far, we couldn’t do this without your amazing support.

The final post for today. How are the Word maps created? Well after lots of research and suggestions to find the list of entries to reflect the diverse, lived experience of a place; its familiar sights, famous places and regional specialities, community spaces, innovations, events, surprising facts and culinary delights to name but a few, the long list gets collaboratively whittled down to find the best entries to capture the spirit of the place whilst weaving together well to form the mapped shape of the city. Alison then hand draws each and every entry for the finished piece of original artwork, creating a unique typographical artwork that is a joy to look at and explore. We have over 200 entries, Alison is poised and ready to work her magic and so, if we can reach our Kickstarter goal by the end of the campaign on Tuesday night, we will bring the Word Map of York to life. We just have to get to that final goal but we can go that right? We have two and a bit days to reach the goal and it is really close (just over £500 to go). Our offers on the maps end at midnight tonight and that will be the final time they are on a deal or discounted price. They will still be available on the campaign of course, but back at their usual price. So if one of the offers was taking your fancy now is the time. Thank you so much to everyone who has got us this far, you are amazing and we are so grateful. Enjoy your Sunday evening lovely people.
