New Word Wednesday

Gamp – discovered listening to the audio book of Alan Bennett’s latest diary book “Enough Said.” He is describing a tall bird standing by a small stream or beck in Yorkshire and uses the term GAMP. Gamp means an umbrella loosely furled … sounds like a heron to me. The aim is to search out fresh words and, to quote The Meaning of Liff, “… get them into the mouths of babes and sucklings” to make the world a more erudite place. (That’s not a glue)

Five points for using it correctly today, two points if you mention your favourite “fresh or new word” in the comments. Enjoy more new words at The Blue House Bookshop in York, where words make sense.

As preparations continue for the clocks going forward at Stonehenge ... we have had our first ever Saturday with no sales at all. Time for changes. From Monday longer opening hours, more days - seven days a week ... and you get locked in if you try to leave without buying a book. See you Monday 🤣😍📚📖💙
